Luxury lifestyle operator Life Time has revealed key findings from its 2025 Wellness Survey, offering insights into the emerging trends that have captured the interest of fitness and wellness consumers

Life Time, renowned for its amenity-rich luxury clubs where waitlists are the norm, has unveiled findings from its annual health and wellness survey, offering a glimpse into what 2025 may hold for fitness and wellness consumers.

More than 1,350 individuals (both general consumers and Life Time members) participated in the survey, which was conducted from December 11 to December 23.

Here are some key takeaways from Life Time’s 2025 Wellness Survey:

According to Life Time’s findings, things are off to a good start when it comes to consumer interest in health and fitness. Notably, 74.7% of respondents plan to prioritize their health in 2025—a nearly 20% increase from 2024.

Building strength emerged as a top goal for the third consecutive year, followed by improved nutrition, increased physical activity and weight loss.

Ahead of 2025, Life Time discovered that over half of respondents (69.1%) plan to increase their time spent in the sauna or try it for the first time in the new year. On the other hand, 42.4% expressed interest in using ice baths or cryotherapy, while 50% are looking to explore assisted stretching services.

Regarding GLP-1s, over half (60.8%) believe weight loss medications have the potential to improve overall health. It’s an area Life Time has invested in with the launch of Miora, which is centered on longevity, weight loss and performance protocols and offers weight loss medications.

Well over half (59.5%) of respondents reported taking a daily supplement, with protein powder, multivitamins and vitamin D being the most popular choices. Regarding new nutrition and wellness trends, nearly half (48.6%) said they prefer guidance from certified professionals.

When it comes to fitness apps, most respondents use them primarily for workouts, followed by data tracking, nutrition and meditation.

Finally, survey participants identified strength training as their preferred workout method, slightly edging out cardio-focused workouts.

“People of all ages are realizing the benefits of strength training and recovery by making it a priority in their routine,” said Danny King, Life Time’s director of recovery and performance. “At Life Time, we’re continuing to expand the size of our strength training spaces and recovery zones on our exercise floors, prioritizing equipment that fits a variety of body types and doubling down on our digital content.”

King also noted Life Time’s complimentary digital app, which makes it easy for users to discover strength training routines and coaching.

On the cusp of a new year, Planet Fitness has unveiled a limited-time offer for its U.S. gyms, reaffirming its strength training strategy

Planet Fitness has committed to becoming the top fitness operator for the most dedicated gym-goers and is already delivering on its promise.

The fitness giant has kicked off a limited-time offer just in time for New Year’s resolutions and plans to continue adding new plate-loaded strength equipment to nearly all U.S. locations in 2025, driven by the rising interest in strength training.

The new strength-focused equipment — which includes the Magnum Supine Bench Press, Hack Squat and Seated Calf Machine — has already been added to more than 1,700 Planet Fitness clubs.

“Consumers are seeking more options for strength training as their fitness needs evolve, and Planet Fitness is a place where everyone can get strong and achieve their goals in the New Year,” Planet Fitness chief brand officer Jamie Medeiros said. “We offer a high-value fitness experience, with a wide variety of both strength and cardio equipment, ensuring everyone can work out their way.”

In addition to its equipment initiatives, new Planet Fitness CEO Colleen Keating outlined a broader marketing strategy for the fitness franchisor on a call with investors last month.

“We’re beginning the shift to communicating the high value of a Planet Fitness membership versus primarily focusing on our low price and using our marketing to demonstrate the breadth of high-quality top-tier equipment in our club,” Keating said.

Prospective Planet Fitness members can now sign up at any U.S. location through January 10 for just $1 down and $15 per month, with the flexibility to cancel at any time.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of our limited-time membership offer and join our inspiring and supportive fitness community where everyone can grow stronger together,” Medeiros continued.

While the high-value, low-priced operator’s new join offer gets underway, Planet Fitness is gearing up to celebrate its tenth year as presenting sponsor of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration and is headed into 2025 with a strong start, according to analysts.

It’s your move, says 24 Hour Fitness.

The health and fitness chain has launched a new brand initiative emphasizing the prioritization of health and wellness while showcasing the gym brand’s capabilities in making fitness fun and versatile.

24 Hour Fitness tapped InGoodTaste for the encouraging (and timely) campaign, launched just ahead of New Year’s resolutions. A :30 spot promoting “Your Move” and the power of 24 Hour Fitness can be viewed here.

“The spirit of renewal we feel at the turn of the new year is an incredible source of personal power,” InGoodTaste CEO Ryan Lindholm said. “Our goal was to capture that energy and turn that into positive, lasting change. Everyone deserves a healthier life; we want to make sure people have the inspiration and support to make it a reality.”

The new campaign highlights several 24 Hour Fitness features, such as state-of-the-art equipment and amenities, complimentary 50-minute custom coaching sessions for members, group fitness offerings like yoga, cycling, HIIT, and dance, flexible personal training packages and perks like guest passes and family add-on options.

“At 24 Hour Fitness, we believe in the power of movement to transform lives,” 24 Hour Fitness vice president of marketing Miia Suortti said. “Our mission is to build a healthier, happier community by providing the tools, services, and environment everyone needs to succeed. With ‘Your Move’, we’re saying we have everything you need, and we can’t wait for you to take that first step.”

24 Hour Fitness is offering exclusive offers to new members throughout January, such as membership promotions and free 1:1 fitness consultations. Prospective new joins can search for a 24 Hour Fitness based on their location or by their choice of amenities, as select locations feature pools, spas, basketball, racquetball and squash courts, volleyball, Pilates reformer studios and more.

The fitness operator —which has over 270 locations—has kicked off a series of upgrades at its facilities with updated equipment, lighting and other interior enhancements. The chain also launched FitPerks this year, a new member loyalty program incentivizing workouts with gym merchandise deals, local restaurants and hotel stays.

The “Judgement Free” fitness chain plans to add more accessible fitness zones for youth at Boys and Girls Clubs in 2025

Planet Fitness is reflecting on its impactful contributions in 2024, including donating over $1 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and awarding 50 teens $50,000 scholarships for promoting inclusion and kindness within their communities.

Since 2016, the low-cost, high-value gym giant has contributed more than $10.5 million to the national organization as part of its initiative to promote youth well-being. The fitness franchisor’s philanthropic efforts have led to the launch of nearly 50 “Mini Judgement Free Zones” in select Boys & Girls clubs across the U.S., offering safe and inclusive spaces for teens to exercise. Additional sites are in the works for 2025, according to Planet Fitness.

“At Planet Fitness, our commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America goes back to our brand purpose and commitment to ensuring everyone feels welcomed and supported both in our clubs and our communities,” Planet Fitness chief corporate affairs officer McCall Gosselin said. “As we approach the 10th anniversary of our Judgement Free Generation initiative, we are extremely appreciative of the generosity of our members, team members, and franchisees. Their contributions ensure that we can continue to empower the next generation to prioritize both their mental and physical health and promote kindness and inclusion in their daily lives.”

Planet Fitness also raised additional funds for Boys & Girls Clubs through online donations during new member registrations and has funded social-emotional skills training for Boys & Girls Club professionals and youth.

“As one of the nation’s largest youth-serving organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is committed to providing young people with the tools and resources they need to build healthy physical and mental habits,” said Chad Hartman, national vice president of corporate partnerships and engagements. “Thanks to the dedication of Planet Fitness, not only do more youth have access to fitness resources in their local Boys & Girls Clubs, but they are promoting acts of kindness and acceptance among their generation in communities nationwide.”

The popular fitness chain is set to celebrate its tenth year as presenting sponsor of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, where a sea of attendees will sport Planet Fitness New Year’s Eve party hats with touches of its signature purple color theme.

“Our New Year’s Eve sponsorship puts fitness top of mind in the new year and reminds everyone to put their health and fitness goals first in 2025,” Planet Fitness chief brand officer Jamie Medeiros said. “No matter what your goals are or what strength looks like to you, all fitness levels can start 2025 strong at Planet Fitness.”

Ahead of what’s anticipated to be a strong year for the gym giant, Planet Fitness is scheduled to participate in an upcoming investor conference on January 13, 2025.

New data from the popular app reveals that nutrition and food tracking is an effective tool for meeting weight management goals

MyFitnessPal, an OG in the food-tracking app space, has released preliminary data revealing that nearly 50% of its app subscribers who use the app daily achieved their weight loss goal (5%) within 16 weeks, with premium users logging a higher success rate (49.3%) than non-premium users (46.9%).

“Those who actively logged food in MyFitnessPal and engaged more frequently with the app were statistically more likely to reach their weight loss goal within four months,” said Dr. Zhaoping Li, professor of medicine and chief of the division of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles. “This finding underscores the role of consistent food tracking as a cornerstone of progress towards weight loss goals.”

As MyFitnessPal points out, committing in the early stages appears to pay off. According to the nutrition app’s internal data, MyFitnessPal found that those who logged their food at least four days within their first week were seven times more likely to make measurable progress toward their weight loss goals.

“Whether you’re just starting out or navigating a medically-supported program, MyFitnessPal offers the tools and insights to support you every step of the way,” MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher said. “While weight loss can seem daunting, just logging one meal can be the start of success.”

Fisher was appointed CEO of the popular nutrition-tracking app last year.

The platform has also been shown to be effective in medical weight management programs, such as Australia’s Medmate, a telehealth company that integrates GLP-1 medication with a premium MyFitnessPal subscription. Those who tracked their food intake with the app were 32% more likely to stick to their GLP-1 treatment than those who did not track foods, and by the eighth week, 37% who tracked their meals remained engaged in the weight management program.

“These results underscore the importance of food tracking in enhancing adherence to complex medical treatments and fostering long-term behavior change,” Medmate CEO and medical director Dr. Ganesh Naidoo said.

MyFitnessPal recently released a new voice-to-text feature for premium members this month, making tracking nutrition intake even easier. The latest offering follows MyFitnessPal’s other tools, such as barcode and image-based meal scanning.

“At MyFitnessPal, we’re always looking for new ways to make nutrition tracking easier and less time-consuming for our members,” MyFitnessPal chief product officer Tim Holley said. “Voice Log is a big step forward in simplifying the experience. By making logging more intuitive, we’re helping our members stay focused on reaching their goals.”

ATN analyzes trends to watch in 2025, including the rise of longevity, the future of fitness wearables and strength training’s surge

The global wellness market is projected to grow to nearly $9 trillion in 2028 as consumers embrace new ways of living, moving and being.

This is good news for the fitness industry, which is enjoying increased foot traffic at gyms and strong member engagement numbers, although getting more Americans involved in fitness remains a vexing problem.

The rise of longevity services, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and holistic wellness presents massive opportunities for fitness brands, but also exposes the industry to increased competition from new entrants. Meanwhile, the popularity of strength training is reshaping the way gyms look across the globe, while the rise of AI begins to transform the way fitness brands do business.

To get you ready for a new year, Athletech News breaks down the top fitness and wellness trends to watch in 2025:

Brands like Therabody and AG1 are taking full advantage of the wellness travel boom, launching airport vending machines

Flight delays and extensive layovers have never been healthier. Those bothersome hours you once spent waiting for time to tick away can now be used to improve your wellness, thanks to a pair of brands.

Therabody, a leading wellness tech company, announced the installation of its first vending machine at the San Francisco International Airport. The machines carry several recovery devices, including the brand’s signature massage guns, for travelers to pick up and use easily in transit.

While this innovation is indeed a first for Therabody, it’s not for the industry at large. Supplement brand AG1 recently released its own vending machines, also at the San Francisco Airport. AG1 powders include vitamins, minerals, probiotics and whole-food-sourced nutrients to enhance energy levels, cognitive function and gut health. AG1 machine rollouts in additional airports including Houston, Chicago O’Hare and Oakland are expected in the future.

But even outside of these initiatives, wellness and wings have been a popular duo of late. Earlier this year, the Melbourne Airport launched its first-ever health club and wellness center, referred to as Higher State, while Roam Fitness opened a gym in the Philadelphia International Airport last year.

Therabody itself has partnered with United Airlines to offer international business class travelers amenity kits featuring eye serum, face spray, hand cream and a cleansing towelette.

These all represent worthwhile investments, as data reflects that health and wellness are often top-of-mind for today’s passengers, sometimes even as the driving force behind their traveling tendencies. The Global Wellness Institute projects wellness tourism, defined as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal well-being, to grow by 10.2% annually from 2023 to 2028, exceeding global GDP growth.

Tech tools from brands like Fit:match, Future and Halotherapy Solutions are making training smarter and more individualized

Technology has certainly advanced all areas of life, but its reach and impact on the fitness and wellness industry are still in the early stages. It’s an area where leading brands are poised to transform the member experience.

Fit:match may have set out to serve the fashion sector, but the company’s advanced 3D body scanning technology now sees a massive opportunity in fitness. Sensing the increased demand and interest in hyper-personalized health and fitness data, Fit:match and its patented platform are ready to change the gym game.

Using the ultimate trifecta — augmented reality, artificial intelligence and 3D technology — Fit:match allows fitness trainers to quickly obtain and analyze comparative data and insights on the 3D shape of clients, providing them with a visual representation.

“Fit:match creates a digital twin of a person’s size and shape – their physique – which has not been available to the masses until now,” explains marketing director Hillary Littleton. “This opens the door for fitness enthusiasts and athletes to literally look at their body composition, fat and muscle mass, asymmetries and more, which in turn unveils limitless opportunities for trainers and gyms. Imagine being able to show a client who is on a weight loss journey their progress in this way.”

Not only does Fit:match drive engagement with the ultimate personalized experience, but gyms can also use the data to track trends, member needs, upsell or offer merchandise discounts to clients meeting their goals.

“Providing hyper-personalized data that’s different from the gym next door will win,” Littleton points out. “Further, you’ll be the gym that facilitates the best results for members because trainers can be more precise in delivering personalized plans.”

How Tech is Enhancing, Not Replacing, Personal Trainers

As fitness and wellness consumers see emerging technology offering groundbreaking ways to put them on the path to better health, the fitness industry and its dedicated personal trainers need not worry about being replaced. After all, the fitness business has been (and will always be) a people-driven industry, and making personal connections with club members and clients will always be a differentiating factor.

Look no further than Future, a digital personal training platform that has released an AI-driven tool, Assistant Coach, to empower fitness coaches to take their business to the next level. This new function allows coaches to create workout plans and send voice or text messages to clients.

“Future’s AI actually promotes more thoughtful and meaningful human interactions,” Future’s co-founder and CEO Rishi Mandal says. “It allows the coaches to focus on the human relationship and also scaffolds for it, suggesting workouts and insights to the trainer based on what workouts users have liked, personal interests, work and travel plans, times of the day/week you’re most receptive, etc.”

Future’s Assistant Coach trained on tens of millions of text conversations between personal trainers and their clients, along with roughly one million custom workout programs, thereby exceeding general-purpose AI models, such as OpenAI.

“Large, general-purpose models are great at some things, but are rarely used for high-value use cases,” Mandal explains. “For instance, you wouldn’t let ChatGPT drive your car for you. Instead, we tend to rely on models that are trained on real-world driving data to power-assisted cruise control or self-driving functions. Similarly, Assistant Coach includes specialized AI agents that are built to help interpret a member’s needs, bank a memory about a member, design custom training plans, and so on.”

While Future’s technology gives personal trainers the ability to not miss a beat, Mandal says the most profound aspect is that it brings coaching, one-on-one expertise and accountability to more consumers than ever before.

Halotherapy Solutions: Pioneering Wellness & Redefining Recovery

Although the “Gym of the Future” may bring personalized, cutting-edge technology to mind, it should not be overlooked that fitness consumers are also looking for holistic wellness solutions.

Enter Halotherapy Solutions, a wellness brand designed to give fitness and wellness operators a unique therapy and recovery offering. The company has tripled its business since 2021, with CEO Steven Spiro noting that Halotherapy has relished the post-pandemic demand for wellness, ready to serve with its innovative products, such as the HaloSauna.

“With the demand for wellness growing, ‘typical’ wellness facilities began to add more modalities like we offer,” Spiro explains. “Plus, and maybe more significantly, ‘non-traditional’ facilities are evolving to become more ‘wellness centers.’ We’ve seen huge growth in a variety of verticals like spas, gyms, tanning salons, yoga studios, wellness real estate communities, senior living, and more.”

The brand recently launched HaloRestore & Recovery — the first and only series of programs that blend salt therapy with its Restore and Recovery equipment, including popular therapies such as red light, cryotherapy and cold plunge.

Keeping a pulse on the wellness sector, HaloRestore & Recovery was born not just out of necessity, but at the urging of the health and wellness industry.

“I have been in the Halotherapy space for about a decade and have seen a shift throughout the years,” Halotherapy CRO and program creator Lisa Semerly explains. “The industry has moved into ‘next generation’ salt therapy, stacking or layering multiple modalities together in one unit to customize the guest’s experience while at the same time maximizing the return on investment per square foot for the facility owner. Taking that one step further and keeping pace with the current environment, HaloRestore & Recovery was conceived last year.”

Halotherapy has given operators the ability to offer advanced recovery options while being mindful of space requirements. Perhaps more importantly, it gives fitness operators the chance to truly serve the majority of their members. As Semerly points out, one in every three athletes experiences some form of exercise-induced asthma, making it difficult for members to hit their personal fitness goals.

“If your respiratory system is run down or under attack and you can’t breathe, your workouts are going to be less effective,” Semerly explains. “Salt therapy alone expands the airway for increased lung function and increased oxygen saturation. It helps with muscle endurance and strengthens the abdominal wall for increased lung capacity and oxygenation.”

And, as consumers become increasingly intrigued by holistic wellness therapies, Halotherapy’s newly patented Vitality Booth Plus serves as the ultimate engagement tool for operators. The Vitality Booth Plus is a multi-function chamber that blends salt and red light therapy — a winning wellness combination.

“What makes the Vitality Booth Plus so effective and unique is the science,” Semerly says. “The inspiration behind it came from one of our partners and salt therapy enthusiasts who owned a World Gym. He was looking for a game changer in the fitness space to include red light and salt therapy and understood that red light in the presence of salt crystals creates a far more effective experience for both.”

In addition to aiding recovery and respiration, the Vitality Booth Plus addresses skin health with anti-aging, wrinkle reduction and even weight loss and mood enhancement.

The future looks bright for Halotherapy, especially as consumers become more health-conscious and seek ways to support longevity.

“We learned a lot in a post-COVID world,” Semerly adds. “More and more folks are taking self-care much more seriously. Those who take health and fitness seriously have realized that without a true recovery component, burnout, injury, and less effective workouts are inevitable. Halotherapy will continue to be part of the conversation in the fitness community well into the future.”

Launched earlier this year, Cudis uses blockchain technology to give users “complete ownership” of their health data

College athletes are getting in on the popular worlds of wearable technology, artificial intelligence and crypto.

Cudis, makers of an AI-powered smart ring that allows users to control their own health data and earn rewards for physical activity, has signed a one-year partnership with UCLA Athletics.

With the partnership, Cudis will get its rings into the hands of UCLA athletes and other students through campaigns including in-game promotions. Cudis will also pursue name, image and likeness (NIL) deals with UCLA athletes in sports including football, women’s gymnastics, and men’s and women’s basketball, tennis and golf.

“This collaboration holds special meaning for us as we give back to the community that helped launch our vision,” said Edison Chen, the CEO of Cudis and a UCLA graduate. “By empowering UCLA’s student-athletes with our innovative tech, we’re not just improving their performance and health, we’re introducing them to the transformative power of blockchain and crypto, rewarding healthy habits along the way.”

Launched earlier this year, Cudis rings are built on the Solana blockchain platform and are powered by AI and Web 3 tech. Similar to popular smart rings from Oura and Samsung, Cudis rings track health metrics such as heart rate, sleep, stress and calories burned. Cudis also offers an “AI Coach” feature that provides personalized health insights.

The company has sold over 10,000 units since its rings first went on sale in April, and its online community has around 100,000 members. In September, Cudis raised $5 million in a seed funding round led by Draper Associates.

Can the Blockchain Revolutionize Wearables?

Cudis’ partnership with UCLA comes as demand grows for fitness and wellness wearables, especially among young consumers. The company cited data that 35% of Gen Z consumers use wearables daily to track their health.

Among wearables, the smart ring market in particular is heating up, with market leader Oura just raising $200 million at a $5.2 billion valuation and tech giant Samsung recently launching the Galaxy Smart Smart Ring.

According to Chen, two things separate Cudis from brands like Oura and Samsung: a reward system that encourages physical activity and the blockchain, which allows Cudis to safeguard its users’ health data.

On the rewards front, Cudis users can earn points for engaging in healthy habits and actions, which are tracked by the ring and redeemable for exclusive rewards, including cryptocurrency airdrops.

Cudis also uses cryptographic signatures, IPFS storage and blockchain verification to safeguard users’ health data. The company says this gives users “complete ownership” of their data.

Data as Currency

Chen argues that Cudis users benefit from a higher level of data privacy than they’d get with wearables like Oura, Whoop or the Apple Watch (these brands have data-privacy policies, although they don’t use blockchain verification).

“Once you put the data on the chain, your data becomes your asset,” Chen told ATN. “This is the first time that users can actually own their health data as an asset. Whoever wants to use your data needs your approval – even us.”

In time, Chen says Cudis users will be able to monetize their own health data, including potentially selling their data to companies who may want to purchase it for research or marketing purposes.

“Our data can actually be worth up to $5,000 every year,” Chen believes.

Big Ambitions

Earlier this month, Cudis launched its second generation smart ring model, the Cudis 002 ($349), which offers up to 10 days of battery life, five meters of Bluetooth connectivity and is waterproof up to a depth of 50 meters.

Cudis aims to sell one million smart rings and grow its online community to at least 5 million members in the years ahead, Chen told ATN.

However, he’s quick to point out that the brand’s long-term mission goes beyond sales targets.

“We want people to realize how important and how valuable their data is,” Chen said. “We want people to know your wellness data is an asset just like your house. If you can rent your house to get paid, you can do the same thing with your data.”

Hot and cold therapy is becoming more accessible in the southern U.S. thanks to brands like Sauna House and others

Alongside warmer temperatures and blooming flowers — communal bathing is expected to arrive in Tennessee this spring. Sauna House, a modern bathhouse brand, announced plans to launch a Knoxville location as early as spring 2025. The brand is eager to bring its innovative wellness approach and hospitality to the area.

“We are incredibly proud to bring a space to our community that not only promotes mental and physical well-being but also offers a beautiful place for neighbors and friends to connect in a tech-free environment,” said Peter and Dianna Osickey, long-time Knoxville residents and the new location’s developers. “After experiencing Sauna House Asheville, we dreamed of having a similar facility closer to home and are thrilled to now be the stewards of this amazing resource for the East Tennessee community.”

Unlike most wellness or recovery studios, Sauna House delivers a rejuvenating experience that also focuses on connecting people to themselves and others rather than technology. All Sauna House locations are device-free, putting a barrier between guests and the often stress-inducing screens that riddle their lives. The brand also offers expansive social spaces featuring innovative architecture and maintains a strong commitment to hospitality to curate personable experiences.

Sauna House is also known for its “Hot-Cold-Relax” circuit, which gives guests a 15-minute hot sauna session, then a 3-5 minute cold plunge followed by an opportunity to return to the sauna. The cycle is then repeated two or three times. Drinks such as tea, adaptogenic sparkling water or kombucha are available to those partaking in the experience as well.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Sauna House to Knoxville,” said founder and CEO Andrew Lachlan. “Knoxville’s energy is rooted in its people and the balance between vibrant city life and access to nature. Sauna House is proud to offer a modern wellness experience that resonates with these values, creating a space for community, relaxation and meaningful connection.”

Along with the aforementioned amenities, the Knoxville Sauna House will feature an outdoor courtyard and a space for private events.

To give the community a taste of what’s to come, Sauna House will also host a pop-up at Ijams Nature Center, which is less than five miles away from the soon-to-be Knoxville location. The mobile sauna experience begins on Friday, Dec. 27, complementing the natural cold plunge taking place at Mead’s Quarry. A polar plunge sauna party is also scheduled for Dec. 31, which Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon will partake in, the brand says.

This passion for wellness and contrast therapy demonstrated by Knoxville’s stakeholders is shared across the country. SWTHZ, an Atlanta-based contrast therapy studio that launched roughly two years ago, had 31 open locations and 16 under construction as of last month. Pause Studio, a holistic wellness brand offering float therapy, contrast therapy and more, has 34 new locations set to open in 2025 as well.

When most people think of fitness and well-being, they often focus on their physical strength, cardiovascular endurance or mental resilience. However, gut health is a critical component of health that’s often overlooked.

For athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and even those simply looking to maintain a healthy lifestyle, gut health is the foundation upon which much of our overall well-being and physical performance is built.

The gut’s impact on fitness goes far beyond digestion – it influences energy levels, immune function, mental clarity and recovery, all of which are crucial to excelling in any fitness regime.

It’s not just athletes or fitness buffs who should be concerned about gut health. The wider population, including those in the workforce, must also prioritize digestive wellness.

An estimated 70 million Americans suffer from gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which cost the United States economy nearly $140 billion annually. These staggering figures point to the widespread impact of gut-related issues on health and productivity. Gut health is therefore not only a cornerstone of physical fitness but also of employee well-being and overall productivity.

The Foundation of Fitness

The gut plays a central role in how the body processes nutrients, manages inflammation and regulates energy levels. These functions are key to fitness, as they impact everything from muscle recovery to stamina. Here’s how gut health influences various aspects of fitness:

1. Energy & Endurance

The gut is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into the nutrients our body needs for energy. If gut health is compromised, nutrient absorption is impaired, which can lead to low energy levels and fatigue – two major roadblocks to consistent training and athletic performance. Athletes rely on efficient digestion to convert carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy during intense workouts. A poorly functioning gut disrupts this process, leaving the body without the fuel it needs to perform optimally.

Furthermore, the gut’s ability to maintain blood sugar levels can directly impact endurance. Balanced gut health helps regulate glucose levels, preventing sudden energy crashes during long training sessions or competitions.

2. Recovery & Muscle Repair

Recovery is a crucial part of any fitness routine, and the gut plays a vital role here as well. A healthy gut supports the body’s ability to manage inflammation and repair tissues after exercise. Inflammation is a natural response to intense physical activity, but if left unchecked, chronic inflammation can lead to injury or prolonged recovery times. The gut, with its diverse microbiome, produces anti-inflammatory compounds that help control this process, ensuring faster recovery and reducing the risk of injury.

Additionally, the gut helps synthesize essential amino acids that are used in muscle repair. Without proper gut health, this synthesis can be compromised, slowing down the body’s ability to rebuild muscle tissue and limiting gains in strength and performance.

3. Mental Clarity & Focus

Gut health doesn’t only impact the body – it plays a significant role in cognitive function. The gut-brain connection, often referred to as the “gut-brain axis,” reveals how the health of the gut can influence mood, concentration and decision-making. For athletes and fitness enthusiasts, mental clarity and focus are just as important as physical strength. Whether you’re aiming for personal records in the gym or competing at a high level, staying focused during training is essential for peak performance.

A healthy gut promotes the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine, which are critical for mood regulation and mental sharpness. In contrast, an imbalanced gut can lead to brain fog, lack of focus and even anxiety – factors that can detract from fitness goals and overall well-being.

4. Immune Function

A robust immune system is essential for maintaining a consistent fitness routine. The gut is home to 70% of the body’s immune cells, making it a critical line of defense against illness. A balanced gut microbiome helps fend off harmful pathogens and promotes immune resilience. For athletes, this means fewer sick days, more time spent training and less disruption to their fitness progress.

Gut health also influences inflammation, and while short-term inflammation helps the body recover from workouts, chronic inflammation can impair immune function, leading to frequent illness or injury. By nurturing gut health, athletes can boost their immune defenses and support long-term fitness goals.

Gut Health in the Workplace: Why Employers Should Care

Gut health is not only essential for those pursuing athletic performance but also for employees across industries. Poor gut health can severely impact workplace productivity, absenteeism, and overall employee well-being. Just as it affects energy, focus, and immune function in athletes, it impacts professionals who need to perform at their best mentally and physically in their jobs. Given that digestive disorders cost the U.S. economy $140 billion annually, employers have a strong incentive to support the gut health of their workforce.

A healthy gut is linked to better mental clarity, stress management, and overall mood—all of which are crucial for maintaining a productive work environment. Chronic stress, which is prevalent in high-demand work environments, directly impacts gut function, leading to issues like IBS and other GI disorders. By addressing gut health in the workplace, employers can reduce sick days, improve job satisfaction, and enhance productivity.

Here are a few key strategies employers can use to support their employees’ digestive health:

1. Promote Stress Management Practices

Chronic stress disrupts the digestive system, contributing to gut-related issues like bloating, constipation, and IBS. Employers can invest in mindfulness programs, offer yoga or meditation classes, and create stress-free spaces where employees can unwind. By helping employees manage stress, employers can not only improve gut health but also boost mental clarity and productivity.

2. Provide Gut-Friendly Snacks & Meals

Incorporating gut-friendly foods into the workplace can significantly enhance digestive health. Stocking breakrooms with fiber-rich snacks, prebiotic foods like bananas and oats, and probiotic options like yogurt and kefir can promote better gut health. Offering employees healthier choices will not only boost their energy levels but also improve their overall well-being, both in and out of the office.

3. Offer Access to Digestive Wellness Apps

Employers can provide access to wellness apps (like Lifesum), which offer personalized nutrition plans tailored to gut health. These apps help employees towards digestive wellness, such as tracking fiber and water intake. By supporting healthier dietary habits, employers can enhance both employee well-being and workplace performance.

4. Educate Employees on Gut Health

Finally, educating employees on the importance of gut health can foster a culture of wellness in the workplace. Offering workshops or wellness seminars on how gut health impacts mood, productivity and overall well-being can empower employees to take charge of their digestive health. These initiatives can reduce absenteeism and improve overall workplace morale.

Gut Health Is a Game-Changer

Incorporating gut-friendly practices into everyday life, whether through diet, stress management, or wellness programs, offers long-lasting benefits. The gut is more than just a digestive organ—it’s the foundation of a balanced, healthy life. Whether you’re an athlete aiming for peak performance or an employee striving for productivity, gut health is the key to unlocking your full potential.

WellnessJK looks to real estate as further evidence suggesting a wellness boom and a tool to gear its offerings in 2025

WellnessJK, the worldwide wellness equipment manufacturer, knows its striking while the iron is hot. The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) expects the wellness economy to reach $9 trillion by 2028 — but that’s just one of many signs touting the industry as a growing cash cow.

The largest, however, is arguably wellness real estate. It’s the fastest growing industry sector within the wellness economy since before the pandemic and experienced an +18.1% annual growth between 2019 and 2023.

“Wellness real estate growth is a great barometer for us to see the health of the industry, the confidence that people are putting into their own wellness journey,” said Andy Dunn, Senior Sales Director, Wellness. “I think that it shows full circle recovery from a tough few years being achieved and now surpassing 2019 growth numbers.”

By manufacturing equipment and helping brands new and old better understand this side of the industry, WellnessJK is riding the wellness wave rather than paddling against it.

WellnessJK’s Take on the Surge

WellnessJK points to two main triggers for this wellness real estate boom — the current nature of the real estate market and our increased desire as individuals to connect with one another.

“The supply and demand of property is in the buyer’s favor right now, with many vacant properties from the last few years, which means that landlords need to promote good pricing and opportunities to get operators to fill vacant space,” said Dunn.

“Secondly, consumers have a deeper understanding of what in-person, community-driven programs and services can do for their mental wellbeing,” he added. “At our core, we are social, community-driven beings that thrive off interaction and experiences. The last few years, if nothing else, were a huge social experiment on how we function in our communities and thrive off human contact in its various guises, whether talking to neighbors daily, attending a Zumba class, seeing your friends and family or being with your CrossFit crew.”

A Focused Response

In response to this real estate trend and its driving factors, WellnessJK adapted its sales tactics with a more targeted approach over the past few years. The brand today primarily focuses on covering both large growth segments and geographic locations already engulfed by the wellness surge to ensure profit.

“One of my mentors told me that you need to fish where the fish are, so we are trying to ensure we develop a sales and coverage strategy that takes full advantage of these trends in the segments we are working on for future success,” said Dunn. “By doing this, we are trying to leverage and use our brand equity to help those customers and segments to have the best possible product experience from a company that has quality, durability and a 100-year history in light and building the best possible product to help our customers achieve their objectives.”

Virtual Wellness

While WellnessJK is known for its red light therapy and touchless massage, which both represent in-person services, virtual wellness still has a place in all this even amid the rise in brick-and-mortar locations. It has and will continue to operate as a bridge of sorts for new wellness consumers, eventually leading them to physical locations.

“We do multiple things for our wellness in a virtual or at-home fashion,” Dunn explained. “Meditation can be done anywhere. It seems more people than ever cold plunge or do contrast therapy at home. For a number of new wellness techniques, trying them at home or virtually is a quick way to discover your like for or tolerance of said technique to then try a brick and mortar or community version of that experience.”

Rather than fall off at the expense of growing in-person wellness opportunities, WellnessJK expects virtual wellness to surge alongside them.

“I think we’ll see the growth of both options as new modalities become more mainstream,” Dunn said. “More and more research on more and more topics is leading wellness seekers to try and experiment with more and more techniques, more experiences and research more modalities that they feel may be a hack to drive better performance, mental health, happiness or all-round wellbeing.”

Future Outlook

WellnessJK also understands that staying on top of industry trends is no singular effort. The brand intends to expand on its findings going forward to remain ahead of the curve, looking at wellness from a more precise lens that breaks down its different sectors and potential new ones.

“We are strategizing around recovery vs relaxation vs rejuvenation – how they differ, what those protocols look like and how we communicate that to customers,” said Dunn. “Also, how we can support the fitness, hospitality and spa world to connect the dots with their users around the use of GLP-1s, Semaglutides and the critical effects that proper recovery and wellness have on that user’s journey.”

WellnessJK also has its sights on applying an even blend between automatic and in-person services in the new year. Doing so promises to give clients and users a broad arsenal of tools to help accomplish their wellness goals.

“We are also having conversations with numerous customers around a trend we think will be more prevalent in 2025, and that’s self service or automated solutions, which fits perfectly with our Wellsystem Wave product to either be a precursor to a treatment or activity or as a product to prolong the luxury or an experience like a massage or spa day.”

The Wellsystem Wave is an automatic dry massage device that uses airless water for a high precision, low maintenance experience. It’s a simple insert to any wellness operation thanks to its convenience, as there’s no staff required to run it, and with the level of comfort it applies.

“We have to continue to be the right partner for our customers, provide credible solutions and insight that will position us as the leader when it comes to wellness insight, product, relationships, quality of service and true partnership to drive long-term customer outcomes,” Dunn concluded.

The field of longevity, essentially the science of living better, for longer, shows no signs of slowing down.

Driven by Americans’ growing distrust of the traditional healthcare system and the rise of wellness-focused podcasts and social media content, an entire industry has formed, with longevity-focused companies reeling in millions in funding to chase what once seemed like an impossible goal: delay – or even reverse – the aging process.

Three leaders of the burgeoning longevity movement – Dr. Mark Hyman, a physician and co-founder of Function Health, Dr. Frank Lipman, a functional medicine doctor who runs the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York City, and Naveen Jain, the founder and CEO of personalized health testing company Viome, sat down during ATN’s DISRUPT video series to give their thoughts on this emerging field.

ATN breaks down some key insights from their conversation, including the rise of longevity science, the future of GLP-1s, and the potential of personalized healthcare.

Understanding the Longevity Boom

What’s behind the longevity boom? For starters, the science of health optimization has come a long way in just the last few years, according to Dr. Hyman.

“There’s been a tremendous boom in the science,” Dr. Hyman said. “Up until a few years ago … it’d been a neglected area. The (National Institutes of Health) has spent almost nothing studying aging itself because it was thought to be this irrevocable process that you could do nothing about. But then a bunch of billionaires who don’t want to die started pouring millions and billions of dollars into longevity research, and so now there’s a whole field of longevity science.”

According to Dr. Hyman, the field of longevity science is about understanding the “underlying mechanisms for how we grow old” and then finding ways people can slow or even reverse the biological aging process through a combination of lifestyle changes, medication and supplementation.

“For the first time in history, we actually are understanding that the things that happen to us – that typically happen to us as we get older – such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s – these are not inevitable consequences of aging,. Neither is frailty or disability or dysfunction; these are optional,” he explained.

As the science of longevity has risen, so too has the general public’s interest in health optimization, at least among a certain portion of the population.

Jain, who founded Viome in 2016, believes the COVID-19 pandemic kickstarted things, creating an urgency that prompted people to become more aware of their health.

“I really think COVID made us realize that you don’t want to be sick and go to the hospital,” Jain said, noting that many people who got severely ill or died from COVID had “comorbidities” that exacerbated the virus.

“During COVID, we realized that we can become the CEO of our own health,” he added. “We realize that health is not something that happens to us, it’s actually something we can control.”

GLP-1s, Other Drugs Show Promise for Anti-Aging

While Dr. Hyman and Dr. Lipman were both quick to note that healthy lifestyle choices including proper sleep, diet and exercise are the foundational pillars of longevity, they believe drugs can make a difference, provided they’re the right ones and are dosed properly.

Dr. Lipman believes GLP-1 agonists have a future beyond helping people manage diabetes or lose weight: in low doses, they can be powerful longevity drugs.

“I see (GLP-1s) as a wonderful anti-aging medication at a low dose,” he said, noting the proper dosage is significantly lower than what’s typically prescribed for weight loss and that GLP-1s must be accompanied by proper diet and exercise.

Peptides (including GLP-1s like Ozempic) in general are highly promising, Dr. Lipman believes, citing clinical results.

“I’m a huge fan of peptides,” he said. “I’ve seen it help myself and many, many of my patients.”

Dr. Hyman believes rapamycin shows promise as an anti-aging drug.

“(Rapamycin) has a lot of really good data in animal models and human models as well,” he said. “Taken intermittently and at low doses, (it) can actually extend life and improve the quality of life and healthspan.”

The Function Health co-founder is more skeptical of metformin, another drug that’s become popular in longevity circles for its potential anti-aging effects. He cited the lack of a large, randomized control trial on the drug’s effects and some concerning findings from interventional trials.

“When you look at the interventional trials, for example, on metformin, it has a lot of benefits, but it doesn’t work better than lifestyle,” Dr. Hyman explained. “And it inhibits something called mitochondrial complex I, which inhibits your ability to build muscle and improve your mitochondrial function, which is critical for aging.”

Is Personalization the Key to Living Longer?

According to Jain, who was inspired to create Viome after his father passed away from pancreatic cancer, personalization is the key to longevity.

Viome offers at-home health tests that measure people’s oral microbiome, gut microbiome and cell activity. The platform then offers personalized food, supplement and lifestyle recommendations based on the results. Viome also offers CancerDetect, a test that’s designed to detect biomarkers associated with early-stage oral and throat cancer, although that service is not yet FDA-approved.

“That’s fundamentally, I think, a foolish idea, that we’re going to find one single silver bullet that’s going to help humanity live healthier and longer,” Jain said. “I believe … there’s going to be 8 billion silver bullets. That means everything is going to be personalized to what’s happening inside your body.”

For Dr. Hyman, who co-founded Function Health in 2021, the future of healthcare won’t just happen inside doctors’ offices, it will happen at home, in gyms and elsewhere. Function offers blood tests that measure 100-plus biomarkers, including hormones, thyroid, heart, metabolic, autoimmunity and toxins, providing users with personalized health recommendations from doctors based on the results.

Last year, Function partnered with Equinox to make its platform available to Equinox members as part of a new longevity membership that includes blood test data and integrated personal training services. While that program will run Equinox members around $40,000 per year (a regular Function Health membership is cheaper, costing $499 per year), Dr. Hyman hopes it marks the beginning stages of making longevity science accessible to a larger swath of the population.

“What we’re talking about is a revolution in consumer-driven healthcare where people are now wanting their own data, wanting to know what’s going on, are not happy with the healthcare system and (are) looking for other places to engage to optimize their health,” Dr. Hyman said. “That’s what …. our partnership with Equinox is doing. That’s what (Jain) is doing with Viome. That’s what (Dr. Lipman) has been working on for his whole life.”

One of the most exciting elements of cutting-edge technology is its influence on the fitness and wellness industry. Whether helping a business attract and retain new clients or giving consumers a premium, hyper-personalized experience, the latest innovations have arrived at a time when health and longevity are top of mind.

Here is what some fitness and wellness leaders have achieved or are currently focusing on in the wearables, artificial intelligence, and tech solutions space.

Wearables

Once reserved for those with diabetes, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices have become the latest tool for biohackers and wellness enthusiasts interested in discovering the precise correlation between lifestyle and health.

This month, Dexcom Stelo became the first over-the-counter glucose biosensor in the U.S. available to consumers without a prescription. The small biosensor, worn on the back of the upper arm, is designed for those with Type 2 diabetes who don’t use insulin and those with prediabetes and sends personalized glucose insights to a user’s smartphone.

Dexcom says the device can potentially slow the progression of diabetes by empowering users to make behavior modifications through its spike and pattern detection and can also positively impact those who use weight loss medication.

“In a world where GLP-1 use is becoming increasingly more common, glucose biosensors like Stelo can help make those medications more effective,” noted Thomas Grace, MD, head of clinical advocacy and outcomes at Dexcom.

Boston-based Whoop is entering new markets this year to bring its human performance wearable to the Middle East and Southeast Asia, but on the end-user side, it’s committed to supporting women’s health.

It’s a critical area of overall wellness that remains largely unrepresented, Whoop CEO Will Ahmed told Athletech News.

“Particularly how women’s bodies adjust during various stages of their life – menstruation, pre- and postpartum, and perimenopause,” he pointed out. “Subsequently, females don’t receive adequate, science-backed information to support them during such critical times.”

Whoop offers users a unique Menstrual Cycle Insights feature, providing training and sleep recommendations based on a woman’s cycle. Earlier this year, the human performance company published a study in PLOS One, a peer-reviewed academic journal, analyzing the physiological data of pregnancies. The study identified key trends in maternal heart rate variability (HRV) inversion in singleton pregnancies, which could help predict delivery dates for premature and full-term pregnancies. Such data is more than just helpful information, Ahmed said.

“Understanding this change in HRV has the potential to save lives, reduce medical costs and provide more insight to expecting parents,” he explained.

Similarly, Oura is also invested in women’s health and has partnered with several companies (such as Natural Cycles and Flo) to increase the accessibility of health information for women.

The smart ring maker has introduced new features — Cycle Insights and Pregnancy Insights — to give users insightful information on their health. And it’s just the beginning, Oura CEO Tom Hale told ATN.

“As we continue to innovate and expand our offerings, we remain dedicated to providing women with the ultimate body literacy tool to support their health and well-being at every stage of life,” he said.

AI

From fitness to nutrition, AI is everywhere.

In terms of fitness equipment, Technogym, the Italian fitness technology company, is at the forefront of the AI revolution. The company, founded by Nerio Alessandri, has created an AI-based end-to-end open platform that has revolutionized fitness for users and operators.

Two of Technogym’s latest products – the Technogym Checkup and Technogym Coach – address longevity with a personalized approach. Technogym Checkup assesses physical and cognitive conditions and provides a “Wellness Age” based on the current state of well-being, while the Coach feature offers a personalized training prescription.

The transformative promises of AI have also caught the attention of Life Time. The luxury athletic country club operator recently partnered with Microsoft to launch L.AI.C, an AI-powered companion for its members. Although the initial rollout will perform basic tasks, such as answering inquiries about club hours and offerings, Life Time CEO Bahram Akradi sees more significant advancements on the horizon that will set his clubs apart.

“From personalized, proactive suggestions and reminders to virtually unlimited opportunities to support our members’ unique needs and preferences, L.AI.C will further extend our brand as the trusted, go-to health and wellness partner for a lifetime,” Akradi said. “The best is yet to come.”

Tech Solutions

While current innovations certainly enhance the experience for fitness consumers, operators and fitness professionals have an abundance of choices when it comes to tech solutions.

Amalgama, a digital innovation consultancy company, helps fitness brands grow and enhance the user experience. The team of sports enthusiasts and former professionals know the industry well, understanding that digital solutions need to target comprehensive well-being while using data analytics that inform strategies.

Fit tech company ABC Fitness also continues supporting fitness operators, having partnered with data science and AI supplier DXFactor. The collaboration brings new offerings to the ABC Ignite mobile platform that will generate bespoke member experiences and integrations.

“This partnership promises to be a cornerstone for the fitness industry, offering a blend of DXFactor’s transformative digital strategies and ABC Fitness’s technological prowess,” said Al Noshirvani, managing partner at Alta Technologies and board member at DXFactor. “Customers can now anticipate a comprehensive digital transformation tailored to meet fitness enthusiasts’ and enterprises’ modern demands.”

The personalized nutrition company is designed to cater to the estimated 15% of individuals with special health needs

Bioniq, a personalized nutrition company, has unveiled its latest innovation: Bioniq Build Your Own. Designed to cater to the estimated 15% of individuals with special health needs, this hyper-personalized supplement solution enables consumers to create tailored formulas addressing allergies, vitamin and mineral intolerances, as well as other unique health requirements.

This launch marks a pivotal step in Bioniq’s mission to reshape the supplements market, an industry projected to grow annually by 6.74% and reach $44.24 billion by 2029. Following the success of Bioniq GO in 2023, the company’s Build Your Own platform represents its most significant advancement yet, particularly as demand from the U.S. market surges.

“Bioniq is the only company capable of offering an extensive list of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in flexible dosages, thanks to our AI-driven approach and innovative granular delivery system,” said Oliver Motisi, Chief Product Officer at Bioniq.

“This unique approach empowers individuals with chronic diagnoses or specific health conditions to create supplement blends tailored to their needs, improving quality of life on a global scale.”

Bioniq Build Your Own enables users to select from over 50 nutrients, either following Bioniq’s data-driven formula recommendations or curating a fully customized blend. The supplements leverage Bioniq’s patented granular dosage form to ensure high bioavailability and efficacy.

The platform is powered by Bioniq’s proprietary AI algorithm, which evaluates users’ blood biomarker data alongside self-reported health metrics, such as height, weight, age, lifestyle and health goals. This process identifies micronutrient imbalances and delivers a tailored supplement solution, alongside daily nutrient support, nutrition consultations and educational resources.

Recent data underscores the effectiveness of Bioniq’s approach:

  • 94% of clients optimized Ferritin levels within 6 months.
  • 86% of clients optimized Zinc levels within 6 months.
  • 82% of clients optimized Vitamin E levels within 6 months.

These findings align with a recent poll revealing that 86% of individuals find the lack of measurable results the most frustrating aspect of traditional supplements.

Bioniq’s user base grew fivefold in 2024, and its products are now sold in over 70 countries. Its success has attracted high-profile partnerships with leading health and sports organizations, including Lanserhof and UFC. The company also recently announced an investment by global football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, raising its valuation to $82 million. This follows a successful Series B round led by HV Capital and Unbound, which raised $15 million to fuel further growth and product development.

“By combining advanced blood biomarker analysis with personalized formulas, Bioniq is not just meeting demand — it’s redefining how people approach their health,” added Motisi.
