Technogym is heading back to the Olympics.

The Italian fitness equipment giant will serve as the official supplier for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, it was announced. The selection marks the tenth time Technogym has been chosen to supply training equipment for the world’s biggest sporting event.

Technogym will set up around 22 training centers for Olympic athletes, six of which will be housed inside the Olympic and Paralympic villages in in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo and surrounding areas. The other 16 centers will be designed for specific disciplines and will be placed inside competition venues, organizers said.

In total, Technogym will produce around 1,000 pieces of equipment to support over 3,500 athletes during the Games, which will be held in February and March of 2026. The company will offer configuration, installation and support services at the centers.

“We are proud to be working alongside the Organising Committee of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Technogym founder and CEO Nerio Alessandri. “At Technogym, we work every day to develop the most innovative digital products and technologies to support athletes to improve their performance and achieve their goals.”

The Milan-Cortina Games figure to be particularly special for Technogym as the brand embraces its Italian roots.

Giovanni Malagò, president of the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, the organizing committee for the Games, called Technogym a “great Italian company that is a leader on an international level.”

“Together we must do something even more fabulous than what has already been done in the past,” Malagò said. “We must use Milano Cortina 2026 as an incubator for successful projects that I hope can be replicated in other cities around the world.”

“Milano Cortina 2026 Games represent a great opportunity for the entire country to promote the culture of sport and wellness with a twofold objective: to spread the culture of health and prevention and to present Italy to the world as the country of wellness and quality of life,” added Alessandri.

The right workout equipment does more than just make you look good; it helps you live longer, better

Getting fast results in the gym is no longer all the rage. Even in strength training, the ideals of recovery and prevention continue to gain steam. The long game is becoming popular — and TRX Training is an established player.

As a leading provider of functional training products, TRX produces or acquires new innovations that directly meet fitness consumer demands. Amid the increased concentration on longevity and the rise of strength training, the brand has found a sweet spot with resistance-based, low-impact tools that help users live longer and healthier lives.

“It’s been incredibly exciting for TRX to witness the simultaneous surge in popularity of both longevity and strength training,” said Brynne Elliott, Vice President of Education & Training at TRX. “This convergence aligns perfectly with our philosophy of promoting sustainable, functional fitness that supports long-term health and well-being. Seeing more people prioritize not just building strength, but also enhancing their overall longevity, validates the direction we are heading in.”

Core Strength & Functional Movement Are Key

Many of TRX’s products nurture core strength. That, along with functional movement, are two foundational principles for injury prevention and maintaining long-term health.

“TRX focuses on functional movement patterns and core stability because these elements are vital to overall fitness and long-term health,” explained Krystal Say, TRX Senior Master Instructor. “Functional movements mimic everyday activities, which helps improve strength, balance, and flexibility in ways that are directly applicable to daily life. This focus not only enhances performance in various physical activities but also reduces the risk of injuries by ensuring that the body moves efficiently and correctly.”

“Core stability is also crucial because the core muscles support almost every movement we make,” she added. “A strong core helps maintain proper posture and alignment, which can prevent strain and injuries. By emphasizing these aspects in our programs, TRX aims to build a solid foundation that promotes prolonged health and resilience against injuries.”

Products That Promote Longevity

TRX’s Suspension Trainer and Rip Trainer spearhead the company’s efforts to collectively address strength and longevity. Suspension Trainers leverage body weight with resistance training bands while engaging a user’s core to build balance and stability.

“This constant engagement of the core helps build strength in the muscles that support your spine and improve your overall functional movement patterns, reducing the risk of injury in daily activities,” said Say. “Additionally, the TRX Suspension Trainer helps optimize mobility by allowing for a full range of motion in every exercise, ensuring that your joints and muscles remain flexible and healthy.”

Rip Trainers feature a similar style of resistance-based, low-impact strength training that also tests a user’s core but instead with a bar attached to a bungee.

“The TRX Rip Trainer uses rotational movement and asymmetrical loads to build core strength,” said Elliot. “This is particularly beneficial to golfers, tennis players, and pickleball enthusiasts, who see not only an improvement in performance, but also a reduction in pain, injury, and stiffness.”

The YBell, a kettlebell-dumbbell hybrid, also grants users a safe strength training experience while dodging injury risk.

“These tools infuse mindfulness into workouts by encouraging focused, deliberate movements and body awareness,” Elliot said of the YBell, Rip Trainer and Suspension Trainer. “This mindful approach not only enhances the effectiveness of each exercise but also promotes mental well-being, contributing to overall longevity.”

The TRX Difference

Notably, TRX equipment doesn’t require users to be perfect to avoid injuries, nor does it ask anyone to move in a way that’s unnatural for the human body.

The same can’t always be said for traditional equipment from competing suppliers — separating TRX from the pack.

“While traditional strength training equipment like dumbbells and barbells can be effective, they can also pose risks if not used correctly,” said Say. “These tools often require precise form and technique to avoid injuries, such as strains or joint issues and do not always mimic functional movement patterns, which increases the risk of injury.

“Without proper guidance, it’s easy to develop poor habits that can lead to long-term problems, especially if the equipment is used in a way that doesn’t engage the core or promote functional movement patterns,” she adds.

For TRX, it’s all about educating gym-goers about these key differences. Their products’ superior functionality is there; awareness is all that’s standing in the way. With over 300,000 course graduates, TRX Training is empowering the next generation of fitness professionals to prioritize long-term health — both for themselves and for their clients. Elliot is committed to democratizing education

“Our courses are expert-led, available in many formats, and accessible to everyone,” she said. “We’re doing everything we can to improve member experience, one coach at a time.”

Pilates Reformers may become as commonplace as treadmills and stationary bikes as home fitness fans fall deeper in love with Pilates

The home gym of the future could soon feature Pilates equipment, per a new report from Technavio, which projects the global Pilates equipment market size to grow by $146.3 million from 2024 to 2028.

Although Pilates classes are seeing increased attendance (ClassPass, a booking and subscription platform, noted Pilates was its most popular workout in 2023, with reservations up 92%), classes that rapidly fill up have led many Pilates fans to consider at-home reformers, crowdsourcing recommendations on brands like AeroPilates or Balanced Body.

Such demand for home fitness equipment is set to drive the global Pilates equipment market, according to Technavio, with 37% of the growth expected to originate from North America. Pilates equipment such as cadillacs, reformers, chairs, barrels, arcs, mats, resistance bands, Pilates balls, and rings are all in high demand, according to the report.

Additionally, chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity, lung problems, and musculoskeletal disorders contribute to the expected Pilates equipment market growth, particularly as consumers have adopted self-care routines and frequent boutique fitness studios.

Pilates Equipment Makers Compete

Leading Pilates equipment brands have been making advancements and leadership appointments in the last year as the low-impact workout has gone mainstream. Reform RX, a company that makes a commercial-grade, digitally connected Pilates reformer, recently landed $5.1 million in funding to drive its global expansion and advance the user experience.

Merrithew, known for its at-home and commercial Pilates equipment and educational services, appointed Jim Heidenreich as its new CEO over the summer, in part to drive product development and digital engagement as Pilates gains more fans.

“I am honored to step into the role of CEO at Merrithew and excited to lead a company that is not just a participant in the mindful movement industry but a leader at its forefront,” Heidenreich said of his new role. “My passion for empowering individuals to lead healthier lives aligns perfectly with Merrithew’s mission. Through strategic initiatives in education, product development, and digital engagement, we are committed to ensuring Merrithew strengthens its prominence in the global market and continues to inspire people worldwide to achieve optimal wellness.”

In September, Merrithew unveiled Cross-Bow Handles, an addition to the stability chair that provides Pilates enthusiasts with balance and stability. The handles also allow Pilates instructors to provide personalized support for clients and their specific needs.

Basi Systems, another leading Pilates equipment maker, launched an innovation over the summer with its Basi Systems Compact Reformer—a space-saving solution that satisfies evolving market demand, according to CEO Matthijs Wilhelmus.

“With the rise of larger group classes, there is a growing need for quick, easily adjustable equipment that maximizes space efficiency and caters to all levels of experience,” Wilhelmus said of the new compact reformer. Wilhelmus was appointed CEO last year to lead Basi System’s expansion plans.

Elevate bodybuilding from routine to remarkable, ensuring every workout translates into tangible gains.

In the competitive world of bodybuilding, the quest for sculpted physiques drives people to push their limits. However, the cornerstone of athletic progress often gets overshadowed—recovery.

Understanding and implementing effective recovery strategies is key, transcending the simplistic equation that more training yields better outcomes.

This common misconception not only stalls progress but can also kickstart a counterproductive cycle of overtraining and injury, derailing ambitions and hard work. Recovery is where the magic of bodybuilding truly happens.

By shifting the focus from the quantity of training to the quality of down time, personal trainers can help bodybuilders unlock their true potential, achieving aesthetic goals alongside improved strength and endurance.

Bodybuilding Muscle Repair and Growth

The muscle recovery and growth process is a fundamental aspect of bodybuilding. Understanding the science behind muscle repair and how the body responds to various recovery techniques can empower clients and trainers.

Muscle growth, or hypertrophy, occurs as a result of the body repairing the microtears in muscle fibers caused by intense weight training. This process is known as muscle protein synthesis, where the body uses amino acids to repair and build muscle fibers, making them stronger and larger than before.

The role of rest in this process is crucial; without adequate recovery time, the body cannot complete the necessary repairs, potentially leading to overtraining and injury rather than muscle growth. Studies have shown that for optimal hypertrophy, muscle groups should be allowed 48 to 72 hours of rest post-workout.

Physiological Response to Recovery Techniques

The body’s response to recovery techniques varies, but the aim is to accelerate the repair process, reduce muscle soreness and enhance overall performance. Here’s how the body responds to some commonly used recovery methods:

Cryotherapy: Exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures for a short period can reduce inflammation and muscle soreness. A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that cryotherapy can significantly reduce muscle soreness after exercise.

Compression Therapy: Compression garments have been shown to aid in recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage by potentially improving the rate of muscle function recovery and reducing the severity of delayed onset muscle soreness. This suggests that wearing compression garments may enhance blood circulation, facilitate the removal of waste products like lactic acid from muscle tissues, reduce muscle soreness, and expedite the recovery process.

Contrast Water Therapy: Alternating between hot and cold water baths can help in reducing muscle soreness and improving recovery. This technique is believed to work by causing the blood vessels to alternately dilate and constrict, enhancing blood flow and helping in the removal of waste products. Research has found that contrast water therapy to be effective in reducing delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS).

Red Light Therapy: Red light therapy helps in significantly lowering inflammation markers such as creatine kinase, which is often elevated after strenuous muscle activities typical in strength training. This suggests quicker muscle recovery and reduced muscle damage.

Infrared Sauna: Infrared saunas use light to create heat, penetrating deeper into the tissues than the warm air of a traditional sauna. This deeper penetration can enhance muscle relaxation and recovery by increasing circulation and promoting the removal of toxins from the body. The heat from an infrared sauna can also lead to a slight increase in heart rate and sweating, similar to the effects of a mild workout, which can further aid in recovery by promoting cardiovascular health.

Incorporating a scientifically backed recovery strategy into a program is as crucial as the training itself for achieving bodybuilding success.

Bodybuilding and Injury Prevention

Gains don’t come as quickly when dealing with nagging injuries. Injury prevention, therefore, is a critical component of a good bodybuilding program. Implementing effective strategies can help avoid setbacks and maintain a consistent training schedule. Here’s a closer look at four key strategies:

Proper Warm-up Routines

Studies have shown that dynamic warm-ups can improve performance and reduce injury risk by preparing the body both physically and mentally for the demands of the workout ahead. Dynamic warm-ups increase blood flow, enhance flexibility and activate the nervous system – reducing the risk of strains and sprains.

Strength and Flexibility Balance

Achieving a balance between strength and flexibility is key in preventing injuries. While strength training increases muscle mass and power, incorporating flexibility exercises, such as stretching and yoga, ensures that muscles and joints retain their full range of motion.

This balance helps prevent strains and injuries by ensuring that muscles can withstand the stresses placed on them during lifting. Research indicates that athletes who maintain an optimal balance between strength and flexibility are less likely to get injured.

Technique Refinement

Continuous refinement of exercise techniques can stave off overuse injuries. By focusing on proper form, bodybuilders can ensure that they are engaging the correct muscle groups and distributing stress evenly, minimizing risk.

Additionally, working with a knowledgeable coach or trainer can provide valuable feedback, correcting form issues before they lead to injury. Studies stress the importance of technique (particularly proper core bracing and training) in reducing the incidence of overuse injuries and enhancing overall training effectiveness.

Periodization Training

Periodization training involves systematically varying the intensity and volume of workouts over specific time periods. This approach helps prevent overtraining by ensuring that the body is not subjected to constant, unvarying stress.

Through periodization, trainers can plan phases of higher intensity and volume with phases of lower intensity and recovery, allowing muscles time to recuperate and adapt. Research supports the use of periodization in improving performance outcomes, making it a valuable strategy for long-term training success.

Integrating Recovery into Training Programs

Incorporating active recovery days into training programs is vital for muscle repair and overall well-being. Examples include light jogging, swimming, yoga or walking. These activities help in flushing out toxins, reducing soreness and promoting flexibility.

Fitness technology aids in recovery as well. Devices that track heart rate variability (HRV), sleep quality and activity levels give real-time insights into the body’s readiness for training. By analyzing these recovery markers, personal trainers can tailor workout intensity and duration to optimize training.

Finally, nutrition plays a very important role in muscle repair and recovery. Key nutrients, such as protein for muscle repair, carbohydrates for energy replenishment, and omega-3 fatty acids for reducing inflammation, are helpful.

Jessica Issacs, a registered dietitian who specializes in performance nutrition for elite athletes, says to optimize recovery and prepare for your next workout, remember the three Rs: Repair, Refuel and Rehydrate.

“Repair muscles with at least 10 grams of leucine-rich protein, aiming for 15-20 grams total,” she says. “ Refuel with a 3:1 ratio of carbs to protein, translating to 45-60 grams of carbs if you’re consuming 15-20 grams of protein. Finally, rehydrate by replacing the fluids and electrolytes lost during exercise.”

Miss these, Issacs says, and you risk increased fatigue, soreness and subpar performance.

A Stronger Body

Recovery is not just a passive phase in the bodybuilding journey; it’s an active component of training that enhances performance, prevents injuries and secures progress. By prioritizing recovery, personal trainers ensure their clients achieve their fitness goals safely and sustainably. This holistic approach to training and recovery maximizes performance and fosters a healthy, balanced result.

Explore how Josh York’s mobile training franchise is expanding globally, adapting to market demands, and offering career advancement for trainers

The future of personal training looks bright.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that the employment of fitness trainers and instructors will increase by 14% from 2022 to 2032, which is faster than the average for all occupations. This is expected to create about 69,000 job openings each year.

Gen Z and Millennnials are largely driving the demand. According to reports, those in the 20 – 40 age range are eager to develop healthy lifestyles and are more wellness-focused than the generations before them.

Considering this growth, Athletech News tapped into Josh York about his business – GymGuyz – the fast growing, in-home mobile personal training and fitness franchise company – to look at the industry, what types of trainers they seek and how they are scaling to answer market demands.

The Genesis of GymGuyz

Sixteen years ago, York was working as a trainer, experiencing the trials and tribulations of late clients, cancellations and more.

“One day I had a client nonchalantly mention that if I were to just come to her house and bring the equipment with me it would be so much easier, and that was my ah-ha moment,” he said. “It was such a simple idea, and nobody was doing it, so I did it.”

Now GymGuyz services thousands of clients in three countries,

“Taking the workout to the client eliminates the excuses,” he says. “Our professional, results-oriented trainers take the customized training plan and equipment to the client’s workout place of choice, whether that’s a home, office, park or anywhere in between.”

With 200 franchises, GymGuyz recently experienced its largest year of growth. York says the company was already on this trajectory and the pandemic catapulted it.

“More people are training than ever before because they are realizing their health is their wealth and it’s becoming a lifestyle of choice,” he explained. “This has translated to tremendous growth for us.”

Meeting the Demand

GymGuyz’s growth has also been driven by strategic shifts to better meet consumer demands and act on changes in the industry.

Already offering services in 13 different health and fitness categories such as cardio fitness, nutrition counseling, senior fitness, strength training, youth and teen fitness and more, the company launched Assisted Stretching Sessions in the Fall of 2023.

“At GymGuyz, we are persistent in our pursuit of empowering our clients with the tools they need to achieve their fitness goals,” GymGuyz President Phil Brojan recently told ATN. “The launch of assisted stretch is a testament to our commitment to excellence and is sure to elevate our client’s fitness journey.”

On the heels of this, the brand introduced a new 1,700 square-foot personal training studio at their headquarters in Melville, New York hosting virtual training sessions to further meet the demand for at-home fitness programs.

“Be it an at-home assisted stretch session, a fitness class at your place of work, or now, an online personal training session, GymGuyz offers a range of services to connect people with personal trainers wherever they are,” said York.

And at the end of last year, the company launched several major B2B partnerships, ushering in a new chapter for the fitness franchise.

“The global corporate wellness market is expected to grow from being a $53 billion market in 2022 to an industry with $74.9 billion in projected revenue in 2030,” said York. “Adding B2B was key and we’ll continue to grow here.”

The brand now provides training services for a major hospital system in the Greater Morris County area, has inked a six-year contract with San Jose’s parks and recreation department, has crafted fitness curriculums for several schools, and more.

GymGuyz CEO & Founder Josh York

GymGuyz Key to Success: Top Talent

To sustain this growth and continue delivering exceptional services to expanding markets, GymGuyz needs to hire more trainers, ensuring they are the best of the best.

“When I first launched GymGuyz I remember crossing my fingers for good resumes, and now we get thousands every week,” York says.

To handle this, they’ve created an in-house program that thoroughly vets and screens all prospects.

Regarding the criteria, York says all GymGuyz trainers must be reputable and have proper certification, great communication skills, a full working knowledge of the latest techniques and science-backed practices, and the ability to fully tailor workouts and nutritional advice to individual needs, goals and limitations.

“We are huge on these core values, but it also goes beyond this,” he says. “A seemingly simple yet often overlooked trait we prioritize in our trainers is a genuine sense of happiness. It’s essential that all the trainers we hire bring a positive and upbeat attitude to their work.”

Beyond a Job: The Career Journey

York highlights a key distinction between GymGuyz trainers and those working in gyms or independently: the potential for growth and scalability.

“When we bring on trainers they sometimes need to be rewired to realize that this opportunity is not simply a job, it’s a career with the potential for a lot of growth,” he says.

“No one will tell you when you enter this field that being a trainer is not scalable,” he says. “I used to work in the typical training environment that requires a grueling pace day in and day out for the same compensation. But GymGuyz is not at all like that.”

He points to opportunities to grow into roles such as territory manager, area manager, general manager and even becoming a franchise owner.

“There are numerous options for growth and long-term careers within the brand,” he concludes.

Future-Proofing GymGuyz: Key Strategies for Success

With this remarkable growth and thousands of trainers worldwide, how does York ensure the brand stays true to its vision?

“Our core values, effective systems and advanced technology,” says York. “I believe GymGuyz stands up to any brand in these three areas.”

Outsourcing tedious and time-consuming tasks to software is liberating for fitness owners. Trusted platforms like Jonas Fitness can help.

Any studio or club operator knows that handling billing and collections is tedious, time-consuming, and frustrating. You didn’t get into the business to run the back end, but hiring staff to manage billing, database management, delinquency management, collections, and member management tasks is costly.

The clear solution is to outsource them, but to whom? Which of the dozens of software platforms and services on the market is the best for your business?

Why not consider a company that’s been managing these crucial tasks while increasing revenue for its partners for forty years?

Over 3,000 fitness facilities have entrusted their business to Jonas Fitness (JFI), and beyond its longevity in the industry, the company stands out in several ways.

Jonas Fitness’ Member Billing Services combines industry-leading techniques and best practices with ala carte billing solutions to increase revenue and collections for its partner clients.

A Customized Approach

With options such as full-service billing software, a dedicated billing rep, on-shore 1-800 call center services, automated collection services, and a Member Services Center, it’s a customizable one-stop-shop for facilities.

“For about the cost of a part-time employee, our Member Billing Service takes back-end tasks off the table for operators,” says Christie Crockett, Supervisor of Member Billing Service. “We work as a natural extension of the facility, and this provides operators with the peace of mind of knowing that behind the scenes, we’re taking care of everything, freeing them up to focus on the day-to-day operations of their business.”

“I love Member Billing Services because it’s allowed me to breathe and to worry about the millions of other things I do. It’s changed my life,” adds Nicole Flemming, Information Systems at American Family Fitness.

Jonas Fitness offers a unique, tailored one-on-one experience by pairing a dedicated specialist with every facility and providing specialized feedback along the way. Crockett says this approach directly impacts revenue.

“This approach of working hand-in-hand with the operator allows us to truly understand their business, identify potential areas for improvement, increase revenue streams, and stay ahead of any issues,” says Crockett.

Your Business at Your Fingertips

Jonas Fitness’ Member Services Call Center can also handle club processes from member cancellations to freezes to fee waiving.

“Our call center manages it all,” notes Crockett. “Under your direction, we implement your business practices while focusing on providing excellent customer service to your members.”

Member Management Services is interactive, and Crockett says it provides all of the benefits of in-house software plus the advantages of outsourcing billing.

“This means member changes, payments, and notes are immediately visible in your system, so you’ll never have to wonder if a member has been contacted or worry about a member’s status,” she explains.

In addition, with JFI MBS running your billing process for you, all funds are settled directly into your account, providing quicker access to your money.

The platform offers automated monthly summaries and the ability to view your corporate dashboard for up-to-the-minute daily business reports, allowing you to stay current on your club’s billing status.

Additionally, JFI experts perform due diligence billing research and inform operators of significant data trends or issues they uncover.

Decrease Decline Rates, Increase Revenue

Crockett says decreasing decline rates is something JFI can reverse due to the company’s many years of experience.

When onboarding, we review a client’s current data and billing practices, and many have decline rates well above industry standards,” she explains. “For these clients, we implement a customized and varied combination of draft days and past due sizes and have been able to increase collected revenue and decrease payment declines for our clients.”

Delinquency Management

In addition to handling billing processes, Jonas Fitness offers various delinquency management services, including IVR (Interactive Voice Response). IVR allows members to update billing information and make payments over the phone.

MBS also utilizes automated phone calls, SMS text messages, and emails to alert members of their balances, renewal reminders, and credit card expiration dates.

Customers who have left Jonas Fitness to try other platforms consistently come back.

“I returned to Jonas Fitness after testing another platform,” says Jaye Danforth, Owner at American Fitness 24/7. “JFI provided better customer service and a customized approach, and I love having a dedicated billing and communications specialist to handle my needs.”

Interest in Pilates is surging and Mariana Tek is helping studios grow, differentiate and provide personalized experiences

Pilates, once considered a niche workout, is making a comeback. The Pilates and yoga industries are forecasted to grow at a rate of 11.4% as far out as 2028, which means that in the next decade, this market is projected to more than double – and Pilates studios are preparing.

“Pilates has been a growing methodology since it was created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s,” says Andrea Speir, founder of Speir Pilates.

“Those who discover it tend to stick with it throughout the course of their lives,” she says. “The days of pushing to the limits for quick gains have gone away. Overly strenuous physical activity is no longer seen as ‘the way to work out.’ That mentality has been replaced with a focus on fitness methods that improve the entire body, physically and through mind-body connection, and thus, Pilates reigns supreme.”

Monica Marder, CEO and founder of FORM50, echoes this sentiment.

“I have always loved Pilates for the way it was kind to my body and left me feeling energized after working hard. With high-intensity Pilates coming onto the scene, it felt like the right time to start FORM50.”

Pilates studio owners and operators are in a position to thrive if they have the right support. They face unique challenges that require contemporary solutions. Pilates is back, smarter and stronger.

Enhancing Client Experience With Mariana Tek

As interest in Pilates intensifies, Marder, Speir and other studios are faced with the challenge of providing personalized and efficient client experiences while managing myriad operational complexities.

During the pandemic, people renewed their focus on wellness. Millennials and Gen Z are increasingly drawn to Pilates for its holistic benefits, emphasis on core strength, and ability to improve flexibility without the risk of injury associated with high-impact workouts. This demographic also expects an integrated experience.

For Pilates studios, providing a superior client experience is paramount. Xplor Mariana Tek from Xplor Technologies, a brand-forward management platform for boutique studios, enhances this experience through its engaging consumer experience.

“The app and booking system are very user-friendly and easy to understand,” says Marder. “The ‘Year in Review’ feature is a nice touch, and we love that our clients can be self-sufficient in their bookings. It significantly enhances the overall client experience.”

At Speir, personalization features are highly valued.

“The client’s experience begins with the ability to select their favorite reformer prior to class and purchase water, socks, or a towel before walking in the door. Everything is ready upon arrival,” notes Speir.

Speir points out that efficiency is an “overlooked element of luxury” that is low cost and high value, and she attributes the “optimal experience” her clients get to Mariana Tek.

Part of that optimal experience involves offering a solution to a challenge unique to Pilates studios – capacity issues. The pick-a-spot function allows clients to choose their favorite mat or reformer, and it helps drive early sign-ups, allows instructors to put faces to names, and drives urgency to book.

Boosting Revenue

Revenue growth is critical for any business, and Pilates studios are no exception.

“Marketing is the key driver of revenue growth for any business,” says Marder. “While word of mouth remains the most powerful form of organic growth, our in-house marketing team, coupled with insights from industry marketing consultants, has proven to be a successful strategy for acquiring and retaining clients.”

Speir says she relies on metrics to help her run her studio, and she appreciates the lack of friction at point of sale.

“Through insights and analytics, we get a holistic view of the business and can identify granular sticking points that need attention,” she says. “The simplicity of the booking system is also a major revenue booster. Clients often arrive at the studio with just keys and a phone, so the ability to purchase items like water and socks when booking the class eliminates another moment to require a card or take time for a transaction.”

The app’s ability to run banner advertisements on the home screen also promotes virtual studios, new offerings, and retail products, driving awareness and sales.

Streamlining Operations and Enhancing Efficiency

Operational efficiency is crucial for Pilates studios, particularly those managing multiple locations.

“Making admin tasks easier simplifies training for our team and makes it seamless for new clients to buy and reserve classes,” explains Marder. “We love that the dashboard shows important data like sales and key metrics.”

Speir adds, “Clients can easily toggle between locations, the filters are easy and intuitive. Inviting a friend, booking your spot and seeing your stats is very easy through the booking app.”

As Pilates studios expand, maintaining consistent client experiences becomes increasingly challenging. Mariana Tek supports studio growth and scalability by offering tools that facilitate management across locations.

“Operating four locations in two different states and introducing our new wellness offerings requires a high level of organizational needs,” says Marder.

Speir, which has expanded from a single studio in Santa Monica to multiple locations in California, mentions that she migrated to Mariana Tek to provide her clients with a more personalized Pilates experience.

“The platform’s features allow us to maintain a high-quality experience across all our locations,” says Speir, who launched her brick-and-mortar boutique Pilates business in early 2016.

“Our driving mission is creating high quality, accessible group reformer classes that are community-driven, athletic and functionally formatted,” Speir continues. “Within 2 years, we opened a second studio that offered individualized training, as well as our teacher education program. Since then, we have opened studios in West Hollywood and Venice Beach, and have more studios in development.”

Thriving in Wellness & Business

FORM50 and Speir exemplify how Pilates studios can thrive with the right support. Marder attributes much of their success to creating a strong community and culture of service, supported by efficient management tools.

“Creating a strong culture of service and a positive work environment is one of our most important missions,” says Marder. “We credit much of our success to frequently measuring client feedback, usage, occupancy and retention to measure how our studios are performing.”

As studios like FORM50 and Speir demonstrate, the integration of advanced technology is key to thriving in the modern Pilates industry, ensuring that the quality and integrity of Pilates are maintained as the practice continues to grow in popularity.

The Austin, Texas-based company provides management software for over 2,000 gyms and studios, and has made a name for itself in martial arts

Gymdesk, a management software provider for gyms and fitness studios, will have deeper pockets from here on out. The fit tech company has secured a $32.5 million growth investment from software-focused investment firm Five Elms Capital.

With the new capital, Gymdesk intends to expand and strengthen its solutions while growing its customer base via new verticals.

“At Gymdesk, we’ve created an industry-leading product in a market dominated by outdated solutions,” said Eran Galperin, the company’s founder and CEO. “We’re excited to partner with Five Elms and leverage their resources and expertise to continue growing our company as we take our operations to the next level.”

Launched in 2016 and steered by individuals with substantial industry knowledge, Gymdesk currently provides software for over 2,000 fitness gyms and studios across 34 countries. The brand manages memberships, billing, marketing, attendance tracking and more with different software solutions for gyms, martial arts schools, gymnastics, yoga studios, dance studios and Pilates studios. Gymdesk has made a name for itself especially among martial arts studios, with clients including Kaijin MMA and Heroes Martial Arts.

Five Elms Capital specializes in fast-growing, B2B software business investments. Practice Better, an all-in-one practice management software platform for health and wellness pros, received a $27 million growth investment led by Five Elms Capital last year.

Outside Gymdesk, things remain fluid in the global fitness software space. Clubessential Holdings, a SaaS provider for health and fitness clubs, public golf courses, military organizations, camp organizations and more, is reportedly exploring a $3 billion sale. PerfectGym, a Poland-based software provider specializing in management solutions for fitness and leisure businesses, was just bought by German fit tech brand Sport Alliance

Virtuagym’s Hugo Braam says fitness brands need to be with their members at all times. Leveraging software to create an omnichannel fitness offering goes a long way in that regard

An omnichannel fitness offering is no longer a bonus — it’s a must-have for gym and studio operators looking to level up their business by attracting and retaining members.

All-in-one health and fitness software provider Virtuagym — a trusted software provider to over 9,000 health and fitness businesses, — sees omnichannel fitness as the future, and it’s working to help its clients become digital players.

“Consumers are used to a 24/7 economy, and members want to be able to work out and stay connected with their club of choice whenever, wherever and however they want,” Virtuagym co-founder and CEO Hugo Braam tells Athletech News.

Braam, who co-founded Virtuagym in 2008 with his brother, Paul, has seen firsthand the evolving needs of gyms and studios in a world where nearly 70% of the global population now owns a smartphone. Therefore, he says, having an exceptional mobile app experience with multiple, seamless customer touchpoints is key.

“Being in your member’s pocket 24/7 enables you to instantly connect with them and provide and sell services wherever they are,” he says.

credit: Virtuagym

The Virtuagym platform allows fitness brands to house all of their services in one place, connecting with customers anytime, anywhere, with an engaging online community feature, challenges and leaderboards, online training and nutrition plans and home video workout platforms.

“We also have PRO+, a turnkey online membership and engagement content solution,” Braam says. “This enables clubs to combine on-site training with an extensive online offering of training videos and wellness content through their tailor-made app. Our GPS Cardio and heart-rate tracking – combined with integrations with the likes of Garmin – also ensure users can make the most of wearable and performance tracking.”

And, leaning into the burgeoning interest in personal training, Virtuagym also offers a Coach Finder feature, enabling members to browse trainer profiles and purchase personal trainer packages right from home.

Tools To Connect With Members Anytime, Anywhere

Second to a stand-out mobile app experience is providing the right tools and insights to engage and activate members during their journey.

“Do you know the activation rate and engagement in your app? Which personas do you serve, and can you provide them with the digital services they would like to receive? We have deliberately set up our Virtuagym mobile app technology to be flexible and allow turning on and off various modules,” Braam says.

Fitness operators can adjust modules like nutrition, audio meditation content, a customizable workout library and a community feature with the option to create various channels for different target groups.

“This approach is supported by our custom home screen that can easily embed our management tools for booking or a webshop, but also allows for the inclusion of third-party services or content,” Braam explains. “This allows you to tailor the app experience, which is vital in the member journey.”

Go Beyond the Four Walls of Your Facility

But it’s more than just offering top-tier tools. As Braam says, the biggest mistake a gym or studio can make is not having a clear engagement strategy.

“The expectations of fitness consumers have fundamentally changed,” he points out. “Where before an individual would expect limited engagement from their club and mostly train within the physical gym, now they want a personalized experience, seamless interaction and the option to workout in the way that best suits their individual needs on any given day.”

credit: Virtuagym

Not providing a forward-thinking and customer-centric approach leaves fitness and wellness operators at a disadvantage and at risk of losing the long-term loyalty of members who are aware of the existing options.

“People still love exercising within the four walls of their club but engagement is not just about the physical equipment, space and available classes,” Braam says. “It’s also about the way your brand communicates, the personalized opportunities you offer and the sense of community you build.”

The Future of AI in Fitness

Virtuagym launched its first AI-driven coaching solution last year, instantly creating tailored workouts for users based on their specific needs which are shared via a chat interface.

The tool is integrated within the Virtuagym Fitness mobile app for end-users, connecting them to personalized workouts powered by Virtuagym’s ever-expanding exercise database of over 6,000 exercises.

“It is also linked with other Virtuagym features, such as wearable activity and heart rate tracking, body composition monitoring and nutrition coaching,” Braam adds. “We are working on expanding the capabilities of AI Coach to trainers, health clubs and corporate businesses already using Virtuagym software.”

Despite Virtuagym’s early advancements in AI, Braam says the fitness industry as a whole has yet to make significant strides in adopting artificial intelligence, but he’s confident Virtuagym will be at the forefront.

“We are still at a very early stage in our understanding and application of the technology, but it can become a game changer,” he says. “At Virtuagym, we know how important it will be to the industry – from improving member personalization to enhancing business efficiency – and want to continue to help drive the new AI-based innovations being created to support clubs and trainers.”

“It is this interface of fitness and technology that gets me excited every day to help build the future of fitness together with our 9,000+ customers worldwide,” he adds.

Optimized for small group training and solo workouts alike, the Connexus line from Matrix serves as a full solution for gyms taking the necessary step of integrating functional training into their offerings

In 2007, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) cited functional training as a top trend in fitness, and now, nearly two decades later, it remains.

Every gym and fitness facility must make room for functional training for the long term, and those that do it thoughtfully and intentionally will win.

“Functional training continues to grow and consumers have come to expect smartly designed spaces that fit their progressing needs and desires,” says Becky Jalbert, Global Product Manager for Personal & Group Training for Matrix.

Facilities must create versatile spaces that support both self-guided and coached workouts seamlessly, with user experience and efficiency as top priorities.

This optimization of space is the focus of the newly enhanced Matrix Connexus line.

From wall or corner space to show-stopping centerpieces, the series provides a fit for every solution, space and goal.

“The intuitive and versatile designs of our Connexus Series bring complete flexibility to functional training,” says Jalbert. “Our spaces support quick transitions between exercises and a limitless range of movement variety, as well as centralized storage that offers instant access to accessories, effectively elevating training for members.

And Jalbert is certainly in a position to know. As a trainer and instructor of twenty years, she brings a boots-on-the-ground perspective to her 16-year role at Matrix.

“I’m in the gym training people every week, which gives me a tremendous opportunity to witness how the products get used,” she says.

Becky Jalbert (credit: Matrix)

Launched in 2015, the Connexus line was designed to fully optimize small-group functional training.

Jalbert explains the thought that went into its design.

For the coached experience, the ability to see all participants is critical,” she explains. “Trainers need to be able to assist with form and progress or regress movements for individuals, so site line is essential while of course providing a great workout for users.”

She points to the product’s ability to shift and accommodate different users on the spot, and also fast turnaround as other key factors.

“We think about repeatable stations and being able to set up and clean up quickly,” she says. “All of this plays a key role in providing an exceptional group training session and that’s what creates a sense of community.”

credit: Matrix

Jalbert says that Matrix is also always looking to evolve.

“We are plugged into NSCA, NASM, ACE, IDEA and others and we constantly seek out customer input as to how people train and interact with products today, versus in the past, because it does change,” she notes.

In that vein, Connexus has evolved its line to accommodate.

“These days, stations and workout spaces need to be flexible to facilitate both group and self-guided functional training workouts, so we have developed four new units to better support both,” Jalbert adds.

This includes the Connexus Functional Trainer, Hub, Edge and Crest. The Connexus Functional Trainer offers a combination of heavy cable resistance and access to training accessories. The Connexus Hub combines a single adjustable pulley and centralized accessory storage. The Connexus Edge incorporates multiple attachment points with configurable designs to allow the connection of multiple bays against a wall or back-to-back arrangement, and the Connexus Crest combines two adjustable pulleys and centralized accessory storage designed for underutilized, small spaces.

“We thought a lot about the details of the frame,” she says. “Accessories used to be housed on a cart, and we have moved them to the frame right where the user needs them. We added more attachment points to support different usage and made access to the pull-up bar easier for people of different heights, and we added the facilitation of cable-based movements.”

credit: Matrix

Another evolution in training, Jalbert says, is the use of smart devices during individual workouts.

“I think COVID drove people to become even more dependent on their phones to feed them workout content and that trend has stuck,” she explains. “Our frames now have device storage so people don’t have to put their phones on the floor and continually reach for them during their workout.”

The stations also have magnetic placards to offer even more exercise guidance.

Interestingly, Jalbert says there was a steadfast focus on keeping things simple with the new iteration of products.

“A common pitfall of operators when choosing equipment is to get overcomplicated,” she says. “Some product companies offer so many options, gyms can end up with an outcome that feels intimidating and even chaotic.”

Therefore, Connexus is purposefully user-friendly and straightforward.

And the line is intentionally versatile not only for the user but for operators. With configurations that work against a wall, in a corner, or as the hub of the facility, Connexus has it covered and can expand to fit the ever-changing needs of the space and members.

In the end, Jalbert says the Connexus line delivers on three things: storage, function and flow.

“These are thoughtfully crafted workout stations that heighten proficiency and efficiency for both users and operators,” she says. “As functional training continues to develop and advance, gyms and users need products that are flexible, well thought out and versatile, and that is the heart of what Connexus is.

Echelon can turn any unused or unoccupied area into an asset for both gym operators and fitness enthusiasts

Most operators see dead space as an unfortunate but inevitable byproduct all gyms and fitness facilities have to deal with. Echelon sees it as an opportunity.

As a worldwide supplier of connected fitness equipment, the brand knows better than most how to make exercise efficient, smart and safe. When Echelon’s innovative products are applied to a gym’s vacant, unused areas, it turns dead weight into profit.

“We want to help commercial fitness facilities have alternate revenue streams,” said Echelon Fitness Regional Sales Director Adam Maloney. “That is the goal and there’s multiple technologies that we’re exploring.”

Use All of Your Gym Floor

Echelon’s Commercial Studio lies at the heart of its efforts to help gyms better utilize their space. The fitness platform grants users access to Echelon’s always-expanding live and on-demand library of private or group fitness classes — now reaching over a thousand videos.

Along with an 8-foot HDMI cable, power supply, and mounts, the studio comes with a 24-inch touchscreen to make the classes accessible. It’s easy to set up and turns any gym area into a fully equipped fitness space at a variety of levels.

“When you talk about maximizing space, it’s the Commercial Studio,” said Maloney. “It takes a space that could be multi-use, maybe it is a Group X room that has a schedule where a live trainer goes in there and leads people through an exercise – but trainers aren’t often doing that 24/7, so in those in-between hours, something like the Commercial Studio can be utilized to run a class with an on-demand library that has thousands of different classes.”

“We make 40 to 60 live classes a week that get rolled up into this platform, and this is just on a 24-inch tablet that gets connected to a screen,” Maloney added. “It’s very cost-effective and easy to put into a space.”

Create Unique Experiences for Premium Members

For gyms, these once-empty spaces become avenues for new revenue.

“Some of our partners are utilizing separate spaces that have a higher membership access point to get access to something like a black card or some kind of higher membership cost,” explained Maloney. “This is a space where they can come in and get that connected fitness experience, but only that upgraded membership gets access. Those facilities are seeing a big return and high usage.”

“The beauty of connected fitness is that you can literally dial up whatever you want, whenever you want and that’s key to maximizing space,” added Shane Lehto, Director of Fitness Development with Y Purchasing, an organization that helps YMCAs purchase equipment and services. “It’s a way to turn a small space into a complete studio environment for members.”

Capitalize on Understaffed Hours

Echelon’s smart equipment makes use of understaffed time just as well as it does unused real estate. With the Commercial Studio, anyone can access safe workout instructions and guidance without the presence of another individual.

Echelon believes the appetite for this type of exercise of this sort has never been higher.

“(Younger) generations want to get the training experience and be engaged without actually talking to anybody,” said Maloney. “It’s similar to the success of self-checkout at grocery stores. To capitalize on the opportunities with this next generation, a product that can offer that engagement to some degree without an actual person is exactly what many people are looking for.”

Lehto adds that he’s seen a “major increase in members of all ages following app-based training programs.”

“Some have shared that they work with a trainer via an app or they follow a particular influencer or subscribe to one of the many great fitness content providers out there that are providing the programming,” he noted. “I’m certainly not suggesting personal training or small groups are declining by any means, but I am suggesting capitalizing on space by keeping it consistently active throughout the day.”

credit: Echelon

Echelon’s multimedia coaching platform feature essentially gives gym members a virtual trainer accessible through text, video messaging and live calls. This provides personalized workouts and nutrition guidance to help individuals reach their goals.

Connected Fitness Never Stops

Looking forward, Echelon is excited about new connected fitness additions to its equipment lineup, including an upcoming slat treadmill and a stairmill.

“What I’m excited about with the stair mill is the content that we’ll bring on it,” said Maloney. “The stairmill market is extremely hot. The one thing it is missing, however, is really good content that could go with it. We’re going to have that coaching element on a stairmill as well as gamification.”

The health/fitness club market is project to reach $302 billion by 2034 and will be driven by Gen Z and Millennials, according to a new report

The door to the age of wellness has swung wide open, with predictions that the health and fitness club market will reach $302 billion by 2034, growing from $124.7 billion this year.

Driving those growth projections are Millennials and Gen Z, who are leading the next chapter in wellness with a renewed focus on health and a demand for personalized fitness experiences, according to a new report from Future Market Insights.

According to the report, those in the 20 – 40 age range are eager to develop healthy lifestyles and are more wellness-focused than the generations before them. One study even suggests that 40% of Millennials and Gen Zers may live to be 100, so they figure to be around for a while as key consumers.

Overall, the Future Market Insights findings spell good news for the fitness and wellness industry, especially with regard to boutique fitness and personal training, two areas tipped for sustained growth over the next decade.

Boutique Fitness Boom

The report finds a growing demand for boutique fitness centers, which are particularly resonating with younger consumers. According to Future Market Insights, this has been fueled by “influencer culture.” As younger generations spend a good chunk of their day scrolling on social media, fitness influencers have inspired interest in supplements, bodybuilding and wellness treatments.

Peloton has found its way onto TikTok, the result of an exclusive partnership that puts its fitness content on the social media platform that’s highly popular with Gen Z, The deal gives Peloton an avenue to introduce its connected fitness offerings to the upcoming generation of fitness enthusiasts.

In addition to the desire for a healthy lifestyle and being inspired by social media trends, younger people are more likely to prioritize fitness and look for ways to connect with others. Jumping on the connection trend, Adidas Training and Bumble teamed up earlier this year to make it easy for gym goers to connect with each other.

Future Market Insights says this finding offers a unique opportunity for cities, noting that they are a “hub of opportunity to realize this potential of fitness,” especially as younger people are “mostly shifting to cities for the betterment of their future.”

By offering convenient locations and flexible operating hours, the report indicates that fitness operators can make it easier to attract this subset of fitness consumers.

It’s an approach many in the industry have long touted – such as Anytime Fitness. Even boutique fitness brands have begun offering special non-staffed hours to meet demand and provide flexibility, including UBX and 9Round Kickboxing, ushering in a new business model that satisfies members while also reducing labor costs.

Personal Training Services in High Demand

Smaller class sizes and more individualized attention, commonly found in boutique fitness experiences, are also key elements driving Gen Z and Millennial interest in the boutique sector, but it’s the personal training aspect that appears to be the big hook, with a predicted CAGR of 9% from 2024 to 2034.

According to Future Market Insights, personal training demand is “skyrocketing.” Behind this trend are two leading factors: technology and celebrities.

Technological advancements have increased user expectations, with consumers looking for personalization in all facets: workout plans, nutrition and progress tracking. It’s easier than ever to find a personal trainer, especially with apps such as TruBe, providing on-demand and in-personal fitness and wellness experts at the tap of a button.

Along with the desire to understand perfect form and technique, celebrities are also contributing to the continued interest in personal trainers, sharing images on social media as they train for the lead in action films with top-tier trainers.

The rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs has also led some fitness brands, such as Equinox, to reimagine fitness programming with helpful ways to encourage Ozempic and Wegovy users to combat valuable muscle mass loss. This may fuel interest in hyper-personalized personal training services and offer trainers a significant market opportunity, Future Market Insights says.

Corporate Wellness on the Rise

With Gen Z expected to outnumber Baby Boomer employees in the workforce this year and the demonstrated interest in health and wellness among the former, it makes sense that many companies are retaining corporate wellness platforms such as Gympass. Plus, as Lifesum has found, younger generations tend to prioritize workplace wellness

Although corporate wellness programs may be criticized for not adding enough value to the overall employee experience, Future Market Insights says corporate wellness initiatives are driving demand for fitness and health clubs.

While the report notes that challenges such as high membership fees can pose a barrier to entry for cost-conscious Gen Z and Millennial wellness enthusiasts, high-value, low-price (HVLP) gyms continue to resonate with younger consumers.

The Randy Hetrick-founded outdoor group fitness franchise is quickly building up a loyal and dedicated member base, as people embrace working out in the elements with like-minded individuals

OutFit Training knows the benefits of taking the road less traveled, in a figurative and literal sense. Offering individuals affordable, outdoor workout experiences rather than a packed basement with bad WiFi, fluorescent lighting and that ubiquitous rubber smell, the brand’s world-class gyms on wheels are changing the way we conceptualize fitness.

With its fleet of customized fitness vans, OutFit pulls up to lots, parks or even your front door with TRX equipment, expert trainers and energy-pumping music to offer a one-of-a-kind outdoor workout experience. Users are connected to trainers and vans, and directed to training ground locations via the company’s mobile app. There, users can also book, pay, and check in to the workout experience of their choosing with just a few clicks.

“To my knowledge, there’s nobody doing what we’re doing in the outdoor environment,” said OutFit Founder and CEO Randy Hetrick, who also founded TRX Training. “You’re out in the elements, you get the sun on your face, the wind in your hair. We train in scenic, public places that are outdoors and inspiring.”

Building Culture & Community

With such a niche product, a tight-knit community has started to surround OutFit. Brought together by shared goals, Hetrick noticed a sense of camaraderie among members. The endorphin boost that comes with being outside only makes the kinship that much stronger.

“There’s something about being outdoors, in the elements and with your tribe,” Hetrick said. “We have a very strong community at OutFit. You’re meeting up outdoors with a bunch of people that you know and like. You all have a common purpose to take care of yourselves out there, and the elements add something to that experience for sure. It’s a little bit burly. You all get out there and get after it.”

Randy Hetrick (credit: OutFit Training)

That sense of community persists after workouts as well. Members even take it into their own hands to set up social events, which further strengthens the OutFit community. While an OutFit workout session is what initially brings members together, the activities they conduct together aren’t all built around workouts.  Member gatherings spring up around philanthropic causes and social events, too.

“Since members tend to live in the hyperlocal areas near the parks and parking lots where we deliver our services, you see many of the same friends at your regular workouts,” said Hetrick. “It’s funny, we’ve had a ton of member-organized socials, where they’ll get together and do a beach cleanup or something else fun. We have relationships with restaurants, where we’ll go and we’ll do a class outside, then go inside and have food and drinks.”

Serving Those Who Serve Us

OutFit’s community is also strengthened by the inclusion of active-duty municipal First Responders and their immediate family members, who get free memberships. OutFit also offers discounts for active duty and veteran members of the Armed Forces.

“Police, fire, EMT, we take care of them,” said Hetrick. “It brings together the First Responders with the members of the community they serve. That adds a cool element to what we do. It’s an opportunity to step up and take care of the people that take care of us.”

Those discounts also extend to OutFit’s franchising program, which is a new point of concentration for the company in 2024. Spouses of active duty military members, military veterans, and active or veteran first responders are offered a 25% discount off the company’s initial franchise fee.

Being a former Navy SEAL, Hetrick understands how many individuals in those communities have the right attitude, talent, and drive to be successful entrepreneurs, but may need a helping hand on the business side of things. OutFit provides that to its franchisees.

“You have these great, motivated, talented folks that just don’t enter the business world with a lot of capital or experience,” said Hetrick. “They have great professional experience and leadership, but may lack formal business experience. That argues for a franchise structure where you’re getting a ‘business in a box.'”

“You’re also getting a partner in the franchisor who can help you learn the ropes,” he added. “A lot of the answers are already there. You just need to execute the play in the way that brings your own flavor and personality.”

Why OutFit Is for Everyone

OutFit’s community is poised to grow even further in the coming years given the company’s low cost of entry and flexible business model. OutFit’s mobile training vans enable multiple revenue streams (ie. large group classes, at-home personal training, and corporate wellness services) and also allow great flexibility in choosing locations, rather than being tied to a single physical location.

“Mobility offers you great flexibility and also buys you the room to make some mistakes that aren’t fatal,” said Hetrick. “If one location doesn’t work as well as you expected, you just drive down the road half a mile and go to another location. With brick and mortar, that’s not an option.”

credit: OutFit Training

The vans also allow OutFit to branch out and attract new members by providing several different types of services around the community. Franchisees could host a large group fitness class early in the morning at the park, then drive to a grade school parking lot to train a small private group of moms or dads after drop off, before heading to a client’s house for a 1:1 personal training session.

After lunch, you might head to the nearby high school to train an athletic team and then hand off the van to another coach to head back to the park for the evening large group classes.

On the financial side of the equation, the vans simply eliminate a large percentage of the initial costs that come with starting a new business. And the low overhead model also allows franchisees to see profit far earlier than they likely would in leasing a traditional brick-and-mortar gym location. Those cost-savings trickle down to members in affordable membership rates.

“When you don’t have brick and mortar, that reduces an entire layer of fixed expenses,” said Hetrick. “Generally one of the challenging things about the brick environment is that you’re personally guaranteeing a five to seven-year lease. The beauty of the OutFit model is that it’s such a low cost of entry and the operating expenses are so low, the business can reach monthly profitability quite quickly, with a small  number of members.”

Those savings from the top allow OutFit to offer what Hetrick believes is the most affordable boutique fitness membership on the market. Members get outdoor inspiration, expertly led classes, a sense of community, and convenient nearby locations, all for just $99 per month for unlimited classes.

Nature, wellness and the rediscovery of play could be defining trends of 2024, according to data from Mindbody and ClassPass

Spending time outdoors could be just what the doctor ordered. The Mindbody 2024 Wellness Index and ClassPass 2023 Look Back Report have highlighted the data-supported benefits of focusing on nature.

According to the Mindbody Wellness Index, 39% of consumers recognize the critical role of spending time outdoors in maintaining mental well-being, citing its contribution to a more balanced life.

Wellness retreats have cropped up, tailored to combat the loneliness epidemic, particularly for men. Companies like Evryman and Junto host men’s retreats in locations like Joshua Tree and Costa Rica, filled with meditations, hikes and group activities. Around 13% of consumers are venturing into camps or retreats that prioritize activities connecting them with nature. Just a weekend-long escape can ground consumers and reduce stress levels.

Even a simple walk can have a big impact. Over half of the population (52%) considers outdoor walking an indispensable part of their general fitness regimen.

Research supports that just 20 minutes a day spent in nature can markedly reduce stress levels. Companies like Apple have leaned into the walking trend, building out its “Time to Walk” offering on Apple Fitness+, where consumers can hear prerecorded stories from celebrities during a walk.

Parallel to the pursuit of nature, 2024 is also marked by adults rediscovering the joy of play. ClassPass’s Look Back Report demonstrates a 92% increase in sports and recreation bookings from the previous year.

Golf is the fastest-growing activity, followed by football, soccer, and tennis. Pickleball has also had an impressive year, with participants of all ages hitting the courts. In 2023, the sport grew to 8.9 million players in the United States, according to a 2023 Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) report.

Nearly half (43%) of all consumers say that community is an important part of wellness experiences, a data point that was likely influenced by the pandemic. Thirty-three percent of consumers prioritize fun and play to support their well-being.

Consumers are also exploring nature’s offerings for health benefits. Seventeen percent of consumers are curious about incorporating adaptogenic mushrooms into their diets, likely drawn to claims that they have the potential to relieve stress, reduce anxiety and enhance cognitive functions.

Nature, wellness and the rediscovery of play could be defining trends of 2024. As consumers increasingly grow frustrated with increasing screen time and tech fatigue, they’re becoming more drawn to spending time outside with others. Mindbody and ClassPass’ reports have made one thing clear: a little more time outside can go a long way.

Execs from Life Fitness, EGYM, Concept2 and iFIT share their thoughts and predictions on the future of fitness equipment

By ensuring a fitness facility or gym has the latest equipment and diverse options, gyms can be competitive and attract and retain members, especially those without access to cutting-edge hardware at home.

Athletech News spoke with four leading fitness equipment companies, Life Fitness, iFIT/Freemotion, EGYM and Concept2, to learn about their products and predictions for how gyms and fitness facilities will evolve in the coming years.

Based on our conversations with these four top brands, fitness operators wanting to have an edge over the competition must offer top-tier strength training and user-personalized connected equipment, bridge the gap between in-gym and home-based workouts and build a robust community.

Life Fitness Embraces Functional Training, Cardio Content

Founded in 1977, Life Fitness has long been a staple in the industry, offering strength, cardio and accessories under its signature Life Fitness brand as well as Hammer Strength.

The fitness equipment maker recently launched LFX, a functional training experience combining equipment with programming, education and digital experiences to give gyms an all-in-one solution. Such systems are a necessity, as Life Fitness notes workouts like Olympic weightlifting, kettlebells and calisthenics are increasing in popularity with gym goers.

“LFX was born as a way to help facilities create these spaces, and then actually program the spaces to bring them to life for their members,” says Leigh Wierichs, global training and education manager at Life Fitness.

credit: Life Fitness

With LFX, gyms can select from seven pre-designed equipment packages, all containing a combination of Life Fitness and Hammer Strength functional training equipment.

“Our customers wanted to optimize the functional training experience for their exercisers, and we wanted to empower them with easy-to-implement solutions,” she said.

Life Fitness also unveiled the Discover SE4 cardio console, allowing facilities to boost member engagement with immersive entertainment, connectivity, workout content and branding.

“SE4 was inspired by research with exercisers and customers with the goal of creating truly immersive experiences to drive member engagement,” said Nick Yogerst, Life Fitness product director, consoles. “We wanted to bring the technologies that consumers expect and utilize in their daily lives into the fitness facility.”

The SE4 is available across the line of Life Fitness Integrity+ and Aspire cardio machines.

For Concept2, Quality Is Paramount

Peter Dreissigacker, who founded Concept2 in 1976 alongside his brother Dick, has been fully immersed in sport and fitness, launching Concept2 out of his love of rowing. The Vermont-based company went on to create the RowErg, an indoor rower, the SkiErg, a cross-country ski trainer and the BikeErg, a sport-based ergometer.

Dreissigacker says the ideal “gym of the future” includes three simple things: strength, cardio and Wi-Fi.

“There will always be weights, perhaps along with some other kind of strength apparatus,” Dreissigacker said. “There will always be cardio to get people moving and (if they don’t already have it) the ‘gym of the future’ will have Wi-Fi to let people connect to their chosen ‘tribe’ and personal devices will be used in the gym to connect to a favorite app for training advice, recording their workouts in a log, entertainment and connecting to other users.”

As for what gives Concept2 the edge over other fitness equipment providers, Dreissigacker emphasizes the brand’s sport-based conception.

“We came to this industry from the sport (rowing) and were focusing on the requirements of the sport and not the fitness industry,” he said. “One of the things of top importance to us was that every RowErg out there would give identical results all the time, which sounds simple, but there is a lot involved to ensure that happens. We have heard many times the RowErg referred to as ‘The Gold Standard.’”

credit: Concept2

Concept2 has come a significant way from producing a paper-based ranking system of times for specific events on the RowErg, notes Dreissigacker.

“As the world moved to the web, more opportunities became available for making connections and driving the ‘Concept2 Culture,’” he said. “Now, there is racing over the internet, online ranking data and training with partners and even strangers around the world in real-time, all part of our free app.”

Just as sports and fitness can drive fellowship, Dreissigacker believes fitness consumers are looking for equipment that can stand the test of time while providing a sense of community.

“There is certainly a portion of fitness consumers who want to be connected to others and I think consumers want to have that ability,” he said. “Some things don’t change. People want something that feels good to use, and they want something that has the quality to last.”

iFIT, Freemotion Go All-In on Connected Fitness

Freemotion, the commercial equipment branch of Utah-based iFIT, is reinvigorating the cardio experience at gyms with its 22 Series, a perfect blend of content and hardware that meets the needs of modern fitness operators.

The 22 Series features six connected cardio machines: an incline trainer, Reflex treadmill, elliptical and three bikes, all equipped with HD touchscreen displays and access to iFIT workout content.

“The conversation (with fitness operators) has shifted from, ‘I need to replace my treadmills’ to ‘I need a digital solution,’” explains Peggy Vo, director of global marketing for Freemotion.

credit: Freemotion Fitness/iFIT

The 22 Series allows members to access iFIT’s vast library of coach-led workouts and takes it a step further with auto-adjusting technology, where speed and incline change depending on what’s happening on-screen. Users also can intervene to adjust the hardware manually.

“We like to call it ‘auto-magic,’” Vo says. “If you’re doing a climbing workout the incline is automatically going to climb as the terrain is climbing. As an exerciser, you don’t have to think about anything.”

Member retention has always been the biggest hurdle facing fitness operators, notes Vo, but with Freemotion and iFIT, members using in-gym Freemotion equipment can continue outside of the gym with the iFIT app.

“This is a perfect solution to keep up with your members who want to work out outside of the gym,” Vo said. “Members can do a workout series on Freemotion equipment (in-facility), but if they can’t come in next week for whatever reason, say they’re traveling, they can go to any hotel gym and run the iFIT program on another treadmill.”

Freemotion offers gyms the option of purchasing membership-wide access to an iFIT subscription, boosting the member experience.

As Vo points out, it’s imperative that fitness operators embrace that some fitness consumers have adopted a hybrid approach.

“We tell our customers, ‘You need to have a digital solution because you’re going to lose your members if not,’” she said. “You want them to use your digital solution and not someone else’s.”

EGYM Is the Leader in Smart Fitness

EGYM, a Munich-based global fitness technology company catering to commercial and boutique segments, has had a stellar 2023, receiving $225 million in growth capital and nailing its first profitable year.

Fifteen thousand facilities worldwide use EGYM’s products and services, such as its Fitness Hub, personalized Smart Strength trainers, Smart Cardio and digital fitness solution Mobile Packs.

Since the fit tech company has made exercising smart and efficient for operators, EGYM’s chief product officer, John Ford, envisions the “gym of the future” touting interconnected and interactive cardio and strength machines.

“Analog tools will (still) be popular, but the experience on these analog tools will also be digitally supported for users who desire the support,” he says.

credit: EGYM

Although EGYM released an eye-opening survey this fall revealing that many gyms haven’t fully adopted digital technology, Ford predicts fitness operators will strive to make seismic shifts in 2024.

“We have seen a big change in awareness and interest in EGYM products in newer markets this past year, across all gym types and segments,” he shared.

Of all of EGYM’s offerings, Ford points to the fit tech brand’s classic line in Circle Mode (a synchronized mode for guided and time-efficient workouts) as having stood the test of time.

“Circuits have always been an effective and efficient way to get beginners training with less intimidation,” Ford said. “EGYM first enhanced this model with digital guidance and motivation over ten years ago, and to this day, 50% of our machines are installed in this mode to engage and guide new exercisers to success.”

He says EGYM’s key differentiator is its focus on digital equipment, ready to provide an entire ecosystem for operators who desire an entirely tech-first concept.

“There are competitors in the space that offer everything you might find in a gym,” Ford said. “They might have hundreds of analog products and a subset of true tech products. We believe it’s a lot easier to focus on great tech-driven experiences because 100% of our products are technology products.”

Ford also points to the increased recognition of strength training benefits and how that is changing fitness operators’ needs.

“Cardio floors are shrinking everywhere, and strength trainers are now a solid majority in gyms,” he said. “Groups that traditionally strength trained less, such as women, are breaking the old norms and becoming lifters. It’s great to see the modality getting the appreciation it deserves.”

The wellness franchise’s new weight management program includes GLP-1s after an InBody scan and metabolic health blood panel

Restore Hyper Wellness, a fast-growing boutique wellness franchise, has launched a new personalized weight management program combining semaglutide medication such as Ozempic and Wegovy with the brand’s therapeutic approach to wellness and health.

Unlike some other weight-management programs quickly popping up as demand for GLP-1s spikes, Restore Hyper Wellness is taking a full-service approach.

The latest offering was developed by Restore’s chief medical officer, Dr. Rich Joseph, a physician specializing in metabolic health and obesity. The program will be found in select Restore locations nationwide.

How It Works

Weight loss-seeking Restore clients first undergo an InBody scan that determines body fat percentage and skeletal muscle mass, a metabolic health blood panel and a telehealth call with a Nurse Practitioner. Along with the use of FDA-approved medications, exercise and a healthy diet are integral parts of the program.

“Our goal is to increase access to effective weight management medications, employ and evaluate rigorous clinical standards based on body composition and provide the education to empower supportive lifestyle behavioral changes,” Dr. Joseph said.

With over 225 locations and more to come, Restore received a $140 million investment led by General Atlantic to accelerate growth and innovation in 2021.

The wellness franchise is hosting two complimentary Zoom-based Discovery Nights on January 9 and January 10, 2024, with Dr. Rich providing a comprehensive look at the new weight loss program. Following the presentation, attendees can ask Dr. Joseph questions about Restore’s latest offering.

“For the first time in human history, more people will die from obesity and its comorbid conditions, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea, than famine,” Dr. Joseph noted. “By 2030, an estimated half of the U.S. population will have obesity, with a disproportionate rise in those with severe obesity. By helping clients with sustainable weight loss, Restore Hyper Wellness aims to help them achieve the energy needed to do more of what they love  — now and long into the future.”

The Restore Approach

In addition to its new weight loss medication and support services, Restore offers science-backed health and performance therapies such as cryotherapy, red light therapy, compression, IV drip therapy, as well as Cryoskin Slimming and Toning sessions to support the weight loss journey.

Last October, Restore named co-founder Steve Welch as its CEO as the holistic wellness franchise prepares to scale to 500 locations in the next five years.

A passionate health and wellness advocate, Welch had shared with Athletech News that Restore is investing heavily in products, technology and partnerships to help clients feel better today and arm them with tools for an even better tomorrow.

“Over the last eight years, we have provided over five million therapy services and learned that Americans want to take control of their health,” Welch said. “They are hungry to understand how to make change.”

The Rise of GLP-1s

Restore is the latest fitness and wellness brand to enter the GLP-1 game, a money-making space projected to be worth $100 billion by 2030.

Boutique fitness franchisor Xponential Fitness has set its sights on the promises of semaglutides with its recently acquired eleventh brand, Lindora, which touts 31 metabolic health clinics offering weight loss medications. Life Time, a luxury fitness and lifestyle operator, is also piloting a medical-expert staffed clinic at its Target Center in downtown Minneapolis, offering weight loss drugs and non-invasive therapies such as infrared saunas, red light therapy, peptides, hormone replacement therapy, IV therapy and cryotherapy chambers.

Most recently, Equinox unveiled a new personal training program geared toward GLP-1-taking clients to combat side effects such as muscle loss and to help them build long-lasting health and fitness habits.

The biggest yearly sales growth in the vitamin and supplements category was seen in areas like performance/recovery, mood and digestion

Health and wellness are a significant priority for Americans, and consumers are seeking an expanding number of vitamin and supplement options that range from prevention to recovery. According to NIQ, a data intelligence service provider, vitamins and supplements is a growing “super category” in terms of revenue, with sales of $13.5 billion in the latest 52-week period ending October 7, 2023, up 1.6% from the year-ago period.

The biggest year-over-year sales growth in the vitamin and supplements category was seen in areas like performance/recovery, mood and digestion.

Vitamins and supplements are a heavily shopped category, with over 90% household penetration, according to Jacqueline Flam, senior vice president of beauty & OTC at NIQ. Flam said that NIQ is seeing strong growth in the category overall, with consumers zeroing in on on gut health, focus and energy, hair and skin health, and healthy aging.

Vitamins & Supplements Shine on Amazon Prime Day

Vitamins and supplements were the second most popular consumer packaged goods (CPG) category purchased on Amazon’s October Prime Day in both 2023 and 2022 according to NIQ survey data. On the 2023 October Prime Day, 26% of consumers surveyed who purchased CPG goods, purchased vitamins and supplements just behind skincare, with 27% of consumers purchasing this top CPG category. Vitamins and supplements were also the second most purchased everyday essential category in the 2022 October Prime Day, with 29% of consumers surveyed reported purchasing vitamins and supplements compared with 34% of purchasing haircare, according to NIQ survey data.

Top Categories Include Performance/Recovery, Mood & Digestion

Consumer interest in the vitamin and supplement survey data on Amazon Prime day aligns with NIQ’s data on the “super category” which includes minerals, supplements and vitamins. NIQ tracks weekly consumer spending across the super category to include total revenue, unit sales and price changes. While revenue increased over the latest 52-week period ending October 7, 2023, unit sales decreased by 3.1% to 1.1 billion YoY. The average unit price of vitamins and supplements increased by 4.7% over the past year with the average unit price totaling $12.24. Nearly every vitamin and supplement category increased prices compared to last year.

According to NIQ data, in the latest 52-week period ending October 7, 2023, the vitamins and supplement categories that experienced strong unit sales growth compared to the previous 52-week period include those that support sports performance and recovery, including hydration, electrolytes, potassium and magnesium – all which help the body to recover and replenish particularly after working out. Additionally, mood supplements and digestive supplements are also seeing solid growth compared to the year-ago weekly period.

Consumers Focus Less on Immunity, Men/Women’s Health & Weight Loss

Notable unit sales declines were seen in supplements that support men’s and women’s health, including prostate and menopause and preventive supplements like immunity supplements and zinc. These vitamins and supplements may have experienced a comparative decline due to peak consumption during pandemic-related news and outbreaks. Weight management supplements declined by 14.2% which may have been impacted due to the recent introduction of new weight loss drugs; this will be a category to watch.

The fitness equipment sector might not get the limelight that’s afforded to other areas of the industry, but there are some innovative, even groundbreaking, things happening on the product design side that are changing the way people work out.

BeaverFit, a fitness design, manufacture and distribution company with strong ties to the U.S. military and a growing private-sector business, is leading the charge when it comes to fitness equipment innovation.

“We’re an equipment manufacturing company, but first and foremost, we’re a solutions company,” Dan Cowan, Head of Marketing for BeaverFit North America, says of the company’s approach.

For BeaverFit, those solutions include building custom training equipment for the U.S. military and boutique fitness studios like Rumble Boxing and MADabolic, but they also encompass a fast-growing area for the company: mobile outdoor training.

BeaverFit is capturing the outdoor mobile training market with its Beyond Trailer™, mobile gym units that attach to the back of a pick-up truck or SUV and contain functional and strength training equipment like squat racks, pull-up bars and dip stations along with accessories and safe and integrated storage space. Beyond Trailers come in three sizes: 8-foot, 12-foot and 20-foot, which allow customers to train groups ranging from 12-plus people to 60-plus.

While the size of the unit determines the exact amount of equipment and storage space available inside, all Beyond Trailers come stocked with height-adjustable pull-up bars and an unfolding rear squat rack or strength rack, along with the option to add functional training accessories as well as battle rope and landmine stations. They’re also customizable from a colors and branding perspective, which is super valuable for entrepreneurs looking to market and build their brand.

“It’s truly like bringing a gym to a client’s home, or being able to go to a park and run a full bootcamp,” Cowan says of the mobile gym units.

BeaverFit’s Beyond Trailer customers include military commands, first responders,  commercial gyms, and university campus recreation and athletics programs. The company is also seeing high demand from one other group in particular: fitness professionals who are building outdoor, mobile training businesses by staging workouts in the yards of their clients’ homes or in public spaces like parks and parking lots.

This new generation of fitness entrepreneurs is increasingly turning to BeaverFit for its mobile training equipment needs, pointing to the customizability, quality and overall ingenuity of the Beyond Trailers as best-in-class.

‘Everything I Had Envisioned’

Kelly Gardner, founder of BeMORE Mobile Fitness in Tampa, Florida, decided to embrace outdoor, mobile training after the pandemic threw a monkey wrench in her plans to open a brick-and-mortar location. Gardner said she struggled at first with how she could effectively transport workout equipment to and from her clients’ homes. Then she found BeaverFit’s Beyond Trailer solution, which seemed tailor-made for her new business idea.

“It was everything I had envisioned but didn’t know how to make happen,” Gardner said of the Beyond Trailers from BeaverFit. “It was like they literally took my (vision) and made it happen.”

A personal trainer for over 20 years, Gardner says she created BeMORE to “change the future of fitness and break down barriers” to working out. BeMORE’s clients are primarily women – Gardner has done fitness sessions for bridal parties and girls’ weekends – and the company focuses on interval and strength training.

Gardner’s BeaverFit unit includes squat racks and pull-up bars, and comes stocked with bumper plates, kettlebells and dumbbells, along with accessories like medicine balls and battle ropes. She tows the unit around using her Jeep Gladiator traveling from client to client in the Tampa area.

“When I roll up, it looks like a CrossFit gym on wheels,” Gardner says, although she notes that BeMORE’s workouts are more group fitness-based than CrossFit style.

Gardner says she also appreciates Beyond Trailers for their ease of set-up, noting that she was concerned about being able to assemble a trailer full of complex workout equipment.

“It was so easy to set it up,” she says. “No tools necessary, just throw some pins in there and open it up.”

I Couldn’t Find Anything on the Market That Compared

Another happy BeaverFit client, Tristan Walliser, has a similar story about why he chose the Beyond Trailer for his outdoor fitness business.

A National Championship-winning former football player for Clemson University, Walliser founded Mind Over Matter Wellness to help young athletes build upon their mental health in addition to physical wellbeing, an area of focus he believes will leave a lasting positive impact on the industry.

Part of Mind Over Matter Wellness’ business includes staging outdoor workouts, which Walliser prefers over indoor training largely due to the many mental and physical health benefits of exercising outside.

To help train his clients, Walliser ordered BeaverFit’s Beyond Trailer 12’, the 12-foot model that comes stocked with enough workout equipment to train 30-plus people at one time. Walliser’s Beyond Trailer includes fold-out squat and bench press racks, Olympic bars with bumper plates and pull-up bars, along with accessories like battle ropes, speed cones, foam rollers and much more.

Walliser said he chose the Beyond Trailer for its quality, sleek look and ability to be used for multiple different types of training, including traditional strength training but also speed and agility work and post-workout recovery.

“I couldn’t find anything on the market that compared quality-wise and usability-wise, so it was an easy decision to go with BeaverFit,” he says.

For Walliser, another important aspect of choosing BeaverFit is the company itself. The Reno, Nevada-based organization is proudly veteran-owned and the majority of BeaverFit’s employees have served in the military. The company also uses American-made products.

“The fact they’re American-made, veteran-owned and veteran-employed was a big thing for me,” Walliser shares. “I’m all about supporting the troops and American-made businesses.”

The Business of Outdoor Training

As BeaverFit continues to market and grow its Beyond Trailer segment, Gardner and Walliser are emblematic of the types of fitness entrepreneurs the company is targeting.

Gardner hopes to one day grow BeMORE Mobile Fitness into a big enough business to have a fleet of Beyond Trailers and potentially expand to other locations including Baltimore, her hometown.

“With mobile training, I feel like the possibilities are endless,” she says.

Fitness professionals will appreciate one aspect of the BeaverFit approach in particular: the company allows businesses to use their own custom branding on their Beyond Trailers. Gardner’s unit, for example, features the ‘BeMORE Mobile Fitness’ logo and custom colors.

“It’s like a mobile billboard when you’re driving down the road,” Cowan says. “We’ve had people who’ve put QR codes on them, will drive to a client’s house, and they come back with four or five leads from people who scanned the code.”

The rising popularity of outdoor training as a modality also bodes well for BeaverFit as it looks to bring Beyond Trailers to more customers.

Walliser notes that young fitness entrepreneurs like himself are increasingly looking to start mobile training businesses over opening brick-and-mortar locations for the cost-saving and scalability benefits. He also notes the changing fitness preferences of consumers post-pandemic, who are recognizing the many physical and mental benefits of exercising not just outside, but in a more intimate fitness setting compared to big-box gyms.

“I think they’re going to start taking an even bigger hold of the market,” Walliser says of BeaverFit. “Especially after COVID, people’s minds are transitioning out of the traditional commercial space to more of the boutique-style gyms.”
