Luxury lifestyle operator Life Time has revealed key findings from its 2025 Wellness Survey, offering insights into the emerging trends that have captured the interest of fitness and wellness consumers

Life Time, renowned for its amenity-rich luxury clubs where waitlists are the norm, has unveiled findings from its annual health and wellness survey, offering a glimpse into what 2025 may hold for fitness and wellness consumers.

More than 1,350 individuals (both general consumers and Life Time members) participated in the survey, which was conducted from December 11 to December 23.

Here are some key takeaways from Life Time’s 2025 Wellness Survey:

According to Life Time’s findings, things are off to a good start when it comes to consumer interest in health and fitness. Notably, 74.7% of respondents plan to prioritize their health in 2025—a nearly 20% increase from 2024.

Building strength emerged as a top goal for the third consecutive year, followed by improved nutrition, increased physical activity and weight loss.

Ahead of 2025, Life Time discovered that over half of respondents (69.1%) plan to increase their time spent in the sauna or try it for the first time in the new year. On the other hand, 42.4% expressed interest in using ice baths or cryotherapy, while 50% are looking to explore assisted stretching services.

Regarding GLP-1s, over half (60.8%) believe weight loss medications have the potential to improve overall health. It’s an area Life Time has invested in with the launch of Miora, which is centered on longevity, weight loss and performance protocols and offers weight loss medications.

Well over half (59.5%) of respondents reported taking a daily supplement, with protein powder, multivitamins and vitamin D being the most popular choices. Regarding new nutrition and wellness trends, nearly half (48.6%) said they prefer guidance from certified professionals.

When it comes to fitness apps, most respondents use them primarily for workouts, followed by data tracking, nutrition and meditation.

Finally, survey participants identified strength training as their preferred workout method, slightly edging out cardio-focused workouts.

“People of all ages are realizing the benefits of strength training and recovery by making it a priority in their routine,” said Danny King, Life Time’s director of recovery and performance. “At Life Time, we’re continuing to expand the size of our strength training spaces and recovery zones on our exercise floors, prioritizing equipment that fits a variety of body types and doubling down on our digital content.”

King also noted Life Time’s complimentary digital app, which makes it easy for users to discover strength training routines and coaching.

On the cusp of a new year, Planet Fitness has unveiled a limited-time offer for its U.S. gyms, reaffirming its strength training strategy

Planet Fitness has committed to becoming the top fitness operator for the most dedicated gym-goers and is already delivering on its promise.

The fitness giant has kicked off a limited-time offer just in time for New Year’s resolutions and plans to continue adding new plate-loaded strength equipment to nearly all U.S. locations in 2025, driven by the rising interest in strength training.

The new strength-focused equipment — which includes the Magnum Supine Bench Press, Hack Squat and Seated Calf Machine — has already been added to more than 1,700 Planet Fitness clubs.

“Consumers are seeking more options for strength training as their fitness needs evolve, and Planet Fitness is a place where everyone can get strong and achieve their goals in the New Year,” Planet Fitness chief brand officer Jamie Medeiros said. “We offer a high-value fitness experience, with a wide variety of both strength and cardio equipment, ensuring everyone can work out their way.”

In addition to its equipment initiatives, new Planet Fitness CEO Colleen Keating outlined a broader marketing strategy for the fitness franchisor on a call with investors last month.

“We’re beginning the shift to communicating the high value of a Planet Fitness membership versus primarily focusing on our low price and using our marketing to demonstrate the breadth of high-quality top-tier equipment in our club,” Keating said.

Prospective Planet Fitness members can now sign up at any U.S. location through January 10 for just $1 down and $15 per month, with the flexibility to cancel at any time.

“We encourage everyone to take advantage of our limited-time membership offer and join our inspiring and supportive fitness community where everyone can grow stronger together,” Medeiros continued.

While the high-value, low-priced operator’s new join offer gets underway, Planet Fitness is gearing up to celebrate its tenth year as presenting sponsor of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration and is headed into 2025 with a strong start, according to analysts.

As the calendar turns to 2025, a new study highlights potential cardiovascular benefits of moderate wine consumption while emphasizing the need for more research

As people worldwide toast to the New Year, new research sheds light on the potential health benefits of moderate wine consumption — offering food for thought for those enjoying a celebratory glass. A recent multicenter study, led by the University of Barcelona and published in the European Heart Journal, suggests that drinking wine in moderation may reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications, though experts caution that more research is needed to solidify these findings.

Study Highlights: Wine and Cardiovascular Health

The study analyzed 1,232 participants in the PREDIMED project, a significant epidemiological study investigating the Mediterranean diet’s impact on heart health. Researchers used tartaric acid, a biomarker unique to grapes and wine, to objectively measure wine consumption — marking a departure from traditional reliance on self-reported data, which is prone to inaccuracies.

Results indicated that light wine consumption (one glass per week to less than half a glass per day) was associated with a 38% reduction in cardiovascular complications, while moderate consumption (half a glass to one glass per day) lowered the risk by up to 50%. However, these benefits disappeared when consumption exceeded one glass daily. Researchers emphasized that moderate wine consumption should always accompany meals, aligning with Mediterranean dietary practices.

The study adds to the ongoing debate surrounding alcohol’s role in health. While excessive alcohol consumption is unequivocally harmful, the effects of moderate wine consumption remain contentious. Some studies highlight protective cardiovascular benefits, while others find no significant effects. Lead researcher Ramon Estruch noted that conflicting results often stem from unreliable consumption records, a challenge this study sought to address through biomarker validation.

Despite the promising findings, experts, including co-author Inés Domínguez, urge caution. “The observational nature of the study limits our ability to establish causality,” she stated. The researchers highlighted two paths for future investigation: randomized nutritional intervention studies and mechanistic studies exploring wine’s anti-inflammatory compounds, such as resveratrol. However, randomized studies are resource-intensive, and results may take years to materialize.

A Balanced Perspective

While this study supports moderate wine consumption as a potential heart-healthy choice within the context of the Mediterranean diet, it underscores the need for further research. The findings offer a nuanced perspective for health-conscious individuals looking to embrace both tradition and science in the New Year.

As 2024 ends and 2025 begins, experts advise moderation and mindfulness — whether raising a glass or considering the broader implications of dietary choices. For now, the relationship between wine and heart health remains a topic of careful consideration, ripe for further exploration between health coaches and clients.

New research reveals that even healthy, well-trained athletes experience performance declines due to air pollution, raising concerns about broader health impacts

Marathon runners meticulously plan their training, gear, and nutrition — but new research from Brown University suggests they may also need to consider air quality. A study published in Sports Medicine has found that fine particulate matter in the air can significantly impact race-day performance, even for the healthiest athletes.

Analyzing data from more than 2.5 million marathon finishers across nine major U.S. marathons between 2003 and 2019, researchers discovered that higher levels of fine particulate matter correlated with slower average finish times. Male runners experienced a 32-second delay per 1 µg/m³ increase in air pollution, while female runners saw a 25-second delay.

While these delays might seem minor, they are critical for runners striving for personal bests or professional records.

“Think of all the effort a professional runner like Eliud Kipchoge puts into breaking world records,” said study author Elvira Fleury, a former graduate student at Brown and current doctoral student at Harvard University. “Our results show that air pollution can’t be ignored by those aiming to optimize performance.”

The study utilized a sophisticated spatial-temporal model to measure air pollution levels at specific points along marathon routes. The findings revealed that even pollution levels below current health standards negatively impacted athletes.

Joseph Braun, professor of epidemiology at Brown, highlighted the broader implications: “This study shows air pollution affects not just the elderly or susceptible populations, but also the fittest and healthiest among us.”

The researchers suggest that regulating emissions from power generation, transportation and industry could improve overall health outcomes and athletic performance.

For endurance athletes and coaches, the study underscores the importance of factoring in environmental conditions during race planning. As marathons grow in popularity, awareness of air quality may become as crucial as proper hydration or pacing strategies.

Longevity expert Dr. Peter Attia and Pendulum Therapeutics co-founder and CEO Colleen Cutcliffe, PhD explored one of 2024’s hottest topics: metabolic health and the role of the gut

2024 has emerged as a defining year for gut health, capped off by Pendulum co-founder and CEO Colleen Cutcliffe, PhD, and longevity expert Peter Attia, MD, who co-led a gut and metabolic health-focused session at LongevityFest 2024 in Las Vegas this month.

Hosted by the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), the event featured the two experts delving into gut health, metabolism and longevity in a session titled “The Importance of Metabolic Health and the Relationship with the Gut: A Conversation.” In their discussions, Cutcliffe and Attia highlighted emerging scientific advancements and next-generation probiotic strains like Akkermansia muciniphila, while emphasizing the importance of medications and lifestyle modifications in addressing common metabolic wellness challenges.

Although Dr. Cutcliffe and Dr. Attia are both at the forefront in metabolic health solutions—Dr. Cutcliffe at the helm of a microbiome science-focused biotech company and Dr. Attia as the founder of Early Medical, a lifespan-centered practice—the duo emphasized that metabolic health is a complex issue requiring more than a one-size-fits-all approach.

“This is a very difficult problem to solve,” Dr. Attia noted. “And when solving difficult problems, I like to have multiple solutions.”

a smiling headshot of Dr. Peter Attia

The discussion also explored the interconnected relationship between diet and the microbiome, highlighting how high-performing microbes stimulate GLP-1 production, generate short-chain fatty acids essential for metabolic health, and thrive on fiber- and polyphenol-rich diets. Interestingly, studies have shown that those with pre- and type 2 diabetes and obesity tend to lack such strains.

“Nutrition and the microbiome are tied at the hip… what you’re eating is feeding these microbes,” Dr. Cutcliffe said.

a smiling headshot of Pendulum co-founder and CEO Colleen Cutcliffe
Colleen Cutcliffe (Credit: Pendulum)

As Dr. Attia explained, Type 2 diabetes extends beyond insulin resistance, representing a wide-ranging dysfunction across multiple organs, referred to as the ‘Ominous Octet,’ and described it as an “organ-by-organ assessment of Type 2 diabetes.”

When discussing solutions to support metabolic wellness, Dr. Cutcliffe emphasized the importance of specific probiotic strains, such as Akkermansia muciniphila and Clostridium butyricum, which also play a role in promoting weight management

“When you don’t have those strains and they’re not able to perform their function, you may not able to stimulate GLP-1 production,” she explained. “Akkermansia muciniphila has sort of emerged as a keystone strain because it also regulates the mucin layer of your gut lining.”

In addition to consuming mucin, the strain can stimulate the production of new mucin. Without Akkermansia, however, the gut lining structure is disrupted, potentially affecting GLP-1 production.

iFIT is using artificial intelligence and more to help take users to new places and offer new modalities

As the modern fitness age begins to take form, gyms and fitness studios are reaching out by the many to offer new modalities, benefits and methods of application. Few, if any, are going further than iFIT, the global fitness technology company.

iFIT, Inc., with support from its commercial equipment division Freemotion Fitness, has an extensive history of making versatile digital fitness options available to a wide audience, most recently with its AI Coach and new suite of smart machines. In doing so, iFIT has solidified itself as a leading facilitator of hybrid fitness.

Hybrid fitness is the concept of working out in different environments whether you are at home, at a gym, or on the go, integrating both in-person and digital elements. This approach allows individuals to participate in a range of activities — such as strength training, cardio, and yoga—through live classes, on-demand videos or virtual sessions. By leveraging technology for personalized fitness plans, hybrid fitness fosters community and accessibility, making it easier for people to maintain an active lifestyle.

“Hybrid fitness” is also about more than your environment, it represents the different ways you can tackle your wellbeing. iFIT intentionally goes beyond standard fitness with its content, touching on an abundance of factors like mental health, general fitness education and more.

Addressing Mental Health

More than one in every five adults in the United States lives with some sort of mental illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It would be a miss not to address the connective tissue between the body and mind. As a sector that looks to improve population health, the fitness industry has both a responsibility and an opportunity to play a vital role in this growing issue.

As well as providing safe and supportive spaces for people to exercise, creating inclusive environments and training staff to be more aware of their members’ mental health needs, the fitness industry can also harness technology in these efforts.

For iFIT, addressing wellbeing is top of mind. The brand works to establish a community feeling with engaging and supportive workout content. Take its Heart to Heart series for example, which takes users on a walk with iFIT trainers who share the ups and downs of their personal stories of overcoming hardship.

“iFIT’s trainers connect users at a human level with content series like Heart to Heart,” said Kelly Fuson, iFIT Senior Director of Global Marketing, Commercial. “This is something you could do in the gym, on a cardio machine at home, or outside in nature.”

Additional series that help to address wellbeing include the Anxiety: Work It Out Series with iFIT Guide Dr. Jarrod Spencer, which shares anxiety-relieving advice during virtual walks through the Caribbean and the Climbing to the Top Series with iFIT Trainer George Hincapie, which takes you to the peak of the legendary Haleakalā Volcano and includes stories of mental resilience.

Wellness IQ

The concept of a Wellness IQ has come up more recently as a way to measure how savvy an athlete may be at understanding their own fitness and wellbeing and how to improve it. It acknowledges that we are all on a unique journey and discovering what works for each individual and how to go about doing it properly, whether it be stretching, strength, or cardio.

iFIT offers users a very inclusive experience, no matter their level of fitness. For those who might be intimidated at first in gym environments – and would perhaps prefer a more remote setting in which to take the first steps of their fitness journey – iFIT provides beginner-friendly and convenient workout options that can help individuals make the most of their gym memberships over time as they gain more knowledge and confidence.

“The beauty of iFIT is that it allows people who might be new to fitness or just starting their journey to accomplish a specific goal become more confident with different types of workouts and techniques at their own pace and in any setting they feel comfortable in,” said Fuson. “The ultimate goal is to serve an athlete at each step of their journey, one that hopefully has them maximizing their gym, studio, or even corporate fitness center through content that comes to life on our Freemotion cardio machines or through strength training with our GENESIS cable machines.”

iFIT’s open and versatile form of educational content combined with its high-quality machines paves the way to an evolved, more fitness-literate world.

“A goal of ours is to either be a gateway to hiring a personal trainer, or help augment an existing personal training plan by filling in the gaps in between sessions, and over time increase an athlete’s Wellness IQ,” Fuson added.

Hybrid Fitness Appeals to All

Consistent gym goers, moderate fitness enjoyers, those who like to experiment with new modalities or just casual consumers all stand to benefit from iFIT’s Hybridization, as the brand offers features catering to all consumer identities.

Today, however, those who lead a balanced lifestyle between physical, nutritional and mental wellbeing and those who continually evaluate new fitness programs, products and services are experiencing the most growth year-over-year, according to iFIT.

The needs and wants of modern fitness consumers are changing. An increasing number now look to improve their overall health and wellbeing – including mental health – rather than to purely build muscle. With its inclusive approach and huge variety of options that cater to people of all ages and backgrounds, iFIT offers the perfect hybrid solution to fitness operators – no matter who their members are.

The “Judgement Free” fitness chain plans to add more accessible fitness zones for youth at Boys and Girls Clubs in 2025

Planet Fitness is reflecting on its impactful contributions in 2024, including donating over $1 million to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and awarding 50 teens $50,000 scholarships for promoting inclusion and kindness within their communities.

Since 2016, the low-cost, high-value gym giant has contributed more than $10.5 million to the national organization as part of its initiative to promote youth well-being. The fitness franchisor’s philanthropic efforts have led to the launch of nearly 50 “Mini Judgement Free Zones” in select Boys & Girls clubs across the U.S., offering safe and inclusive spaces for teens to exercise. Additional sites are in the works for 2025, according to Planet Fitness.

“At Planet Fitness, our commitment to Boys & Girls Clubs of America goes back to our brand purpose and commitment to ensuring everyone feels welcomed and supported both in our clubs and our communities,” Planet Fitness chief corporate affairs officer McCall Gosselin said. “As we approach the 10th anniversary of our Judgement Free Generation initiative, we are extremely appreciative of the generosity of our members, team members, and franchisees. Their contributions ensure that we can continue to empower the next generation to prioritize both their mental and physical health and promote kindness and inclusion in their daily lives.”

Planet Fitness also raised additional funds for Boys & Girls Clubs through online donations during new member registrations and has funded social-emotional skills training for Boys & Girls Club professionals and youth.

“As one of the nation’s largest youth-serving organizations, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is committed to providing young people with the tools and resources they need to build healthy physical and mental habits,” said Chad Hartman, national vice president of corporate partnerships and engagements. “Thanks to the dedication of Planet Fitness, not only do more youth have access to fitness resources in their local Boys & Girls Clubs, but they are promoting acts of kindness and acceptance among their generation in communities nationwide.”

The popular fitness chain is set to celebrate its tenth year as presenting sponsor of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration, where a sea of attendees will sport Planet Fitness New Year’s Eve party hats with touches of its signature purple color theme.

New data from the popular app reveals that nutrition and food tracking is an effective tool for meeting weight management goals

MyFitnessPal, an OG in the food-tracking app space, has released preliminary data revealing that nearly 50% of its app subscribers who use the app daily achieved their weight loss goal (5%) within 16 weeks, with premium users logging a higher success rate (49.3%) than non-premium users (46.9%).

“Those who actively logged food in MyFitnessPal and engaged more frequently with the app were statistically more likely to reach their weight loss goal within four months,” said Dr. Zhaoping Li, professor of medicine and chief of the division of clinical nutrition at the University of California, Los Angeles. “This finding underscores the role of consistent food tracking as a cornerstone of progress towards weight loss goals.”

As MyFitnessPal points out, committing in the early stages appears to pay off. According to the nutrition app’s internal data, MyFitnessPal found that those who logged their food at least four days within their first week were seven times more likely to make measurable progress toward their weight loss goals.

“Whether you’re just starting out or navigating a medically-supported program, MyFitnessPal offers the tools and insights to support you every step of the way,” MyFitnessPal CEO Mike Fisher said. “While weight loss can seem daunting, just logging one meal can be the start of success.”

Fisher was appointed CEO of the popular nutrition-tracking app last year.

The platform has also been shown to be effective in medical weight management programs, such as Australia’s Medmate, a telehealth company that integrates GLP-1 medication with a premium MyFitnessPal subscription. Those who tracked their food intake with the app were 32% more likely to stick to their GLP-1 treatment than those who did not track foods, and by the eighth week, 37% who tracked their meals remained engaged in the weight management program.

“These results underscore the importance of food tracking in enhancing adherence to complex medical treatments and fostering long-term behavior change,” Medmate CEO and medical director Dr. Ganesh Naidoo said.

MyFitnessPal recently released a new voice-to-text feature for premium members this month, making tracking nutrition intake even easier. The latest offering follows MyFitnessPal’s other tools, such as barcode and image-based meal scanning.

“At MyFitnessPal, we’re always looking for new ways to make nutrition tracking easier and less time-consuming for our members,” MyFitnessPal chief product officer Tim Holley said. “Voice Log is a big step forward in simplifying the experience. By making logging more intuitive, we’re helping our members stay focused on reaching their goals.”

The long-term collaboration designates Reebok as the official apparel and footwear sponsor for DeChambeau and his team. This partnership marks Reebok’s re-entry into the Performance Golf category, with plans to launch new products and initiatives.

Starting in March 2025, Reebok will introduce DeChambeau as the face of its Golf apparel and footwear line, including the debut of Nano Golf, a new on-course performance shoe. The Crushers GC team, which includes Paul Casey, Charles Howell III, and Anirban Lahiri, will compete in head-to-toe Reebok gear. Fans can also purchase official team kits, featuring polos, outerwear, pants, shorts and golf shoes, on Reebok’s website and at LIV Golf events.

Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time major champion spoke about the partnership. “Reebok aligns perfectly with our vision for the future of golf,” said DeChambeau. “We’re eager to push the sport to new heights and broaden its appeal to a global audience.” DeChambeau has achieved 13 professional wins, including two individual titles in the 2023 LIV Golf League season, and had a record-breaking 58 in the final round at The Greenbrier.

Reebok and DeChambeau also plan to launch digital campaigns and community activations to make golf more accessible. These initiatives will include affordably priced products and outreach programs to support individuals with limited access to the sport. DeChambeau’s curated collection, “Bryson’s Picks,” featuring his favorite training gear, will be available ahead of the official golf line launch.

Todd Krinsky, Reebok’s CEO, highlighted the brand’s goal to move beyond traditional golf norms. “Bryson has brought fresh energy to the game, and we’re thrilled to work together to reintroduce Reebok Golf with a contemporary perspective,” Krinsky said.

ATN analyzes trends to watch in 2025, including the rise of longevity, the future of fitness wearables and strength training’s surge

The global wellness market is projected to grow to nearly $9 trillion in 2028 as consumers embrace new ways of living, moving and being.

This is good news for the fitness industry, which is enjoying increased foot traffic at gyms and strong member engagement numbers, although getting more Americans involved in fitness remains a vexing problem.

The rise of longevity services, GLP-1 weight-loss drugs and holistic wellness presents massive opportunities for fitness brands, but also exposes the industry to increased competition from new entrants. Meanwhile, the popularity of strength training is reshaping the way gyms look across the globe, while the rise of AI begins to transform the way fitness brands do business.

To get you ready for a new year, Athletech News breaks down the top fitness and wellness trends to watch in 2025:

Club Automation knows what fitness businesses are after today from a software provider and has wasted little time moving to provide it

Club Automation, part of the Daxko family of fitness brands, knows there’s far more

to running a gym or health club than setting up shop with equipment and staff. By leveraging its digital prowess with its human-first approach, the solution has established itself as a robust foundation any fitness business can build itself upon.

“We’re always on the pulse of what’s next,” said Wendy White, Chief Marketing Officer at Daxko. “By leveraging the latest trends we ensure gyms are positioned ahead of the curve. So while they’re focused on running their business and delivering an exceptional member experience, we’re handling the digital side — making sure they’re seen, heard, and growing.”

Paving a Smooth Road

The days of finding a gym by word of mouth or any other non-digital format are long gone. The gym sign-up experience now takes place almost entirely online. There, Club Automation operates like a savvy guide, helping individuals looking for new memberships reach their destination.

“Think about when someone is searching for a gym online,” said White. “They find a gym with a site that’s easy to navigate, filled with great member reviews, where they can sign up for a membership right away. Maybe they take advantage of a special offer and even book their first class — all in one smooth, hassle-free process. That’s where Club Automation steps in. We’re focused on creating that seamless, end-to-end experience from the first click through to their first visit, and well beyond.”

Club Automation accomplishes this first by putting gyms under a proper spotlight. The Club Automation digital marketing team begins by optimizing a client’s website. Doing so makes sites findable with little to no scrolling or page flipping required. After that, a simplification process takes place where Club Automation turns the site into a “central hub” for both current and potential new members.

“Signing up, booking classes, you name it— that’s all integrated with the club’s management system for real-time updates,” said White.

The buck doesn’t stop there, however. Club Automation also prioritizes keeping members engaged even after they sign up. Either with a club-branded mobile app or customized communication campaigns, Club Automation feeds members the right information in a timely fashion, prompting them to stick with their chosen gym.

Seamless on Both Sides

Club Automation’s end-to-end user experience streamlines the process for both operators and members. There’s a clear connection between ease of use on the operator side and a seamless experience for members — once one aspect clicks, the other naturally follows.

“One of our partners recently said something that really stuck with me,” said White. “They mentioned that if their staff is struggling with clunky systems or unnecessary tasks, their members are going to feel that frustration too — and it’s true. A smooth member experience starts with having well-organized operations in the background that’s not only easy for your members, but for your staff as well.”

Wendy White for Daxko
Wendy White | Daxko

Club Automation recognizes the chain reaction begins with the implementation of an efficient software solution and ends with an upgraded member experience.

“At Club Automation, we help facilities simplify their day-to-day so staff can focus on their members,” said White. “We simplify scheduling, automate billing and give staff the tools they need to focus more on the members and less on the paperwork. It’s all connected. When the gym runs smoothly, the members feel it, and that’s what leads to a better experience for everyone.”

Separation from the Pack

For as forward-thinking as Club Automation is, it isn’t the only software supplier that’s come to understand what an upgraded digital infrastructure can do for fitness brands. Regardless, Club Automation still stands out from the crowd with how closely it works with gyms to not just maintain, but empower their brand identity.

“We’re a one-stop shop for all things digital — from designing websites to SEO optimization and managing paid ads,” said White. “But it’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. We work with each gym to figure out their specific goals and build a strategy that fits their needs.”

Club Automation now offers website plugins that connect important features like scheduling, programming, and member login directly to a client’s existing WordPress website. If needed, they can also rebuild the entire site, starting from the gym’s brand identity and goals to create a tailored solution.

Club Automation’s diligence is well-rewarded. The solution reports that on average, operators with the Club Automation platform fully integrated into gym operations, from website to member management, are able to cut down administrative time by 20% and boost lead conversion by 26%.

“One facility told us they’re now saving over $86,000 per month,” said White. “That’s huge for them, not just in terms of savings, but in how they can reinvest those resources into their staff and member experience. It’s stories like that which really show how much of a difference the right system can make.”

The future of fitness may hinge on the ability of gyms to leverage technology while maintaining a personal touch. Club Automation exemplifies this balance, setting a standard for how fitness brands can enhance operations and member engagement. Those who adapt and embrace these changes will lead the way in creating fitness experiences that resonate with the needs of modern consumers.

The “Exercise and Fitness for All Act” and a related bill seek to make fitness facilities more accessible for people with disabilities

Congressional Democrats are renewing their push for a bill that would require gyms and fitness facilities around the country to carry fitness equipment that’s accessible for people with disabilities and potentially hire additional staff members.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Calif.) on Tuesday introduced a bill designed “to promote the provision of exercise machines and equipment, and exercise and fitness classes and instruction, that are accessible to individuals with disabilities.”

DeSaulnier’s bill seems to be a companion to the “Exercise and Fitness for All Act of 2024,” which was introduced by Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) this summer.

Duckworth’s bill contains language that would require gyms and other fitness facilities to offer “accessible exercise machines and equipment” to people with disabilities. It would also mandate that gyms and fitness facilities have at least one staff member on the floor at all times who is “trained to provide assistance to individuals with disabilities.”

If passed, the bill would direct the United States Access Board, a federal agency devoted to accessibility, to create guidelines for gyms and fitness facilities regarding accessible equipment.

Duckworth, who has served as a U.S. senator since 2017, is an Iraq War veteran who lost both of her legs and partial use of her right arm in a helicopter accident during the war. She told Forbes this summer that since her injury, she’s encountered difficulties “finding fitness equipment I could use” in gyms.

Duckworth has introduced the Exercise and Fitness for All Act before, including in 2021.

“I thought, ‘We really need to make sure people can access fitness facilities,’” Duckworth told Forbes regarding her motivation to re-introduce the bill this past summer.

While several legislative hurdles remain before the Exercise and Fitness for All Act of 2024 can become law, the fitness industry is already beginning to grapple with new federal regulations.

In October, the Federal Trade Commission instituted a new “click to cancel” rule that will make it easier for consumers to cancel paid subscriptions, including gym memberships. The Health & Fitness Association (HFA), the fitness industry’s biggest trade group, has said the rule will create regulatory “burdens that will disproportionately affect small businesses” like mom-and-pop gyms and small fitness studios.

Brands like Therabody and AG1 are taking full advantage of the wellness travel boom, launching airport vending machines

Flight delays and extensive layovers have never been healthier. Those bothersome hours you once spent waiting for time to tick away can now be used to improve your wellness, thanks to a pair of brands.

Therabody, a leading wellness tech company, announced the installation of its first vending machine at the San Francisco International Airport. The machines carry several recovery devices, including the brand’s signature massage guns, for travelers to pick up and use easily in transit.

While this innovation is indeed a first for Therabody, it’s not for the industry at large. Supplement brand AG1 recently released its own vending machines, also at the San Francisco Airport. AG1 powders include vitamins, minerals, probiotics and whole-food-sourced nutrients to enhance energy levels, cognitive function and gut health. AG1 machine rollouts in additional airports including Houston, Chicago O’Hare and Oakland are expected in the future.

But even outside of these initiatives, wellness and wings have been a popular duo of late. Earlier this year, the Melbourne Airport launched its first-ever health club and wellness center, referred to as Higher State, while Roam Fitness opened a gym in the Philadelphia International Airport last year.

Therabody itself has partnered with United Airlines to offer international business class travelers amenity kits featuring eye serum, face spray, hand cream and a cleansing towelette.

These all represent worthwhile investments, as data reflects that health and wellness are often top-of-mind for today’s passengers, sometimes even as the driving force behind their traveling tendencies. The Global Wellness Institute projects wellness tourism, defined as travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal well-being, to grow by 10.2% annually from 2023 to 2028, exceeding global GDP growth.

British Journal of Sports Medicine researchers have found yet another link between exercise and longevity

It’s no secret that physical activity leads to a healthier, longer life. But for those over, or at least getting close to the hill, this is especially true, a new study suggests.

Researchers working with the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that low physical activity (PA) is tied to increased mortality. The researchers used a predictive model based on device-measured PA risk estimates and a life-table model analysis to establish results. The life table used included 2019 United States population and 2017 mortality data. Participants were 40 years or older with PA levels based on data from the 2003-2006 National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey.

The study discovered that if all individuals were as active as the top 25% of the population, Americans over the age of 40 could live an extra 5.3 years on average. Dr. Mary Njeri Wanjau, who worked on the project, called the five-year figure “whopping” while referring to it on social media.

The trial also saw individuals in the lowest activity quartile experience the largest bump in lifetime per hour through PA as simple as walking. An additional hour of doing so could add roughly 6.3 hours of life expectancy, per the report.

While notable, these findings follow what we’ve heard from the industry at large, specifically regarding older individuals. Another study earlier this year found that weight training can offer long-term health benefits for individuals of a “retirement age.” While 40 is a long way from senior citizenry, an additional study also found that HIIT may improve cognitive health for those aged 65 to 86.

The British Journal of Sports Medicine also recently discovered a link between high cardiorespiratory fitness and reduced risk of Dementia. It published other findings this year from the University of Sydney explaining how a few minutes of vigorous, incidental PA a day can significantly reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in middle-aged women who don’t engage in structured exercise.

Tech tools from brands like Fit:match, Future and Halotherapy Solutions are making training smarter and more individualized

Technology has certainly advanced all areas of life, but its reach and impact on the fitness and wellness industry are still in the early stages. It’s an area where leading brands are poised to transform the member experience.

Fit:match may have set out to serve the fashion sector, but the company’s advanced 3D body scanning technology now sees a massive opportunity in fitness. Sensing the increased demand and interest in hyper-personalized health and fitness data, Fit:match and its patented platform are ready to change the gym game.

Using the ultimate trifecta — augmented reality, artificial intelligence and 3D technology — Fit:match allows fitness trainers to quickly obtain and analyze comparative data and insights on the 3D shape of clients, providing them with a visual representation.

“Fit:match creates a digital twin of a person’s size and shape – their physique – which has not been available to the masses until now,” explains marketing director Hillary Littleton. “This opens the door for fitness enthusiasts and athletes to literally look at their body composition, fat and muscle mass, asymmetries and more, which in turn unveils limitless opportunities for trainers and gyms. Imagine being able to show a client who is on a weight loss journey their progress in this way.”

Not only does Fit:match drive engagement with the ultimate personalized experience, but gyms can also use the data to track trends, member needs, upsell or offer merchandise discounts to clients meeting their goals.

“Providing hyper-personalized data that’s different from the gym next door will win,” Littleton points out. “Further, you’ll be the gym that facilitates the best results for members because trainers can be more precise in delivering personalized plans.”

How Tech is Enhancing, Not Replacing, Personal Trainers

As fitness and wellness consumers see emerging technology offering groundbreaking ways to put them on the path to better health, the fitness industry and its dedicated personal trainers need not worry about being replaced. After all, the fitness business has been (and will always be) a people-driven industry, and making personal connections with club members and clients will always be a differentiating factor.

Look no further than Future, a digital personal training platform that has released an AI-driven tool, Assistant Coach, to empower fitness coaches to take their business to the next level. This new function allows coaches to create workout plans and send voice or text messages to clients.

“Future’s AI actually promotes more thoughtful and meaningful human interactions,” Future’s co-founder and CEO Rishi Mandal says. “It allows the coaches to focus on the human relationship and also scaffolds for it, suggesting workouts and insights to the trainer based on what workouts users have liked, personal interests, work and travel plans, times of the day/week you’re most receptive, etc.”

Future’s Assistant Coach trained on tens of millions of text conversations between personal trainers and their clients, along with roughly one million custom workout programs, thereby exceeding general-purpose AI models, such as OpenAI.

“Large, general-purpose models are great at some things, but are rarely used for high-value use cases,” Mandal explains. “For instance, you wouldn’t let ChatGPT drive your car for you. Instead, we tend to rely on models that are trained on real-world driving data to power-assisted cruise control or self-driving functions. Similarly, Assistant Coach includes specialized AI agents that are built to help interpret a member’s needs, bank a memory about a member, design custom training plans, and so on.”

While Future’s technology gives personal trainers the ability to not miss a beat, Mandal says the most profound aspect is that it brings coaching, one-on-one expertise and accountability to more consumers than ever before.

Halotherapy Solutions: Pioneering Wellness & Redefining Recovery

Although the “Gym of the Future” may bring personalized, cutting-edge technology to mind, it should not be overlooked that fitness consumers are also looking for holistic wellness solutions.

Enter Halotherapy Solutions, a wellness brand designed to give fitness and wellness operators a unique therapy and recovery offering. The company has tripled its business since 2021, with CEO Steven Spiro noting that Halotherapy has relished the post-pandemic demand for wellness, ready to serve with its innovative products, such as the HaloSauna.

“With the demand for wellness growing, ‘typical’ wellness facilities began to add more modalities like we offer,” Spiro explains. “Plus, and maybe more significantly, ‘non-traditional’ facilities are evolving to become more ‘wellness centers.’ We’ve seen huge growth in a variety of verticals like spas, gyms, tanning salons, yoga studios, wellness real estate communities, senior living, and more.”

The brand recently launched HaloRestore & Recovery — the first and only series of programs that blend salt therapy with its Restore and Recovery equipment, including popular therapies such as red light, cryotherapy and cold plunge.

Keeping a pulse on the wellness sector, HaloRestore & Recovery was born not just out of necessity, but at the urging of the health and wellness industry.

“I have been in the Halotherapy space for about a decade and have seen a shift throughout the years,” Halotherapy CRO and program creator Lisa Semerly explains. “The industry has moved into ‘next generation’ salt therapy, stacking or layering multiple modalities together in one unit to customize the guest’s experience while at the same time maximizing the return on investment per square foot for the facility owner. Taking that one step further and keeping pace with the current environment, HaloRestore & Recovery was conceived last year.”

Halotherapy has given operators the ability to offer advanced recovery options while being mindful of space requirements. Perhaps more importantly, it gives fitness operators the chance to truly serve the majority of their members. As Semerly points out, one in every three athletes experiences some form of exercise-induced asthma, making it difficult for members to hit their personal fitness goals.

“If your respiratory system is run down or under attack and you can’t breathe, your workouts are going to be less effective,” Semerly explains. “Salt therapy alone expands the airway for increased lung function and increased oxygen saturation. It helps with muscle endurance and strengthens the abdominal wall for increased lung capacity and oxygenation.”

And, as consumers become increasingly intrigued by holistic wellness therapies, Halotherapy’s newly patented Vitality Booth Plus serves as the ultimate engagement tool for operators. The Vitality Booth Plus is a multi-function chamber that blends salt and red light therapy — a winning wellness combination.

“What makes the Vitality Booth Plus so effective and unique is the science,” Semerly says. “The inspiration behind it came from one of our partners and salt therapy enthusiasts who owned a World Gym. He was looking for a game changer in the fitness space to include red light and salt therapy and understood that red light in the presence of salt crystals creates a far more effective experience for both.”

In addition to aiding recovery and respiration, the Vitality Booth Plus addresses skin health with anti-aging, wrinkle reduction and even weight loss and mood enhancement.

The future looks bright for Halotherapy, especially as consumers become more health-conscious and seek ways to support longevity.

“We learned a lot in a post-COVID world,” Semerly adds. “More and more folks are taking self-care much more seriously. Those who take health and fitness seriously have realized that without a true recovery component, burnout, injury, and less effective workouts are inevitable. Halotherapy will continue to be part of the conversation in the fitness community well into the future.”

Remote personal training, Hyrox and the “30-30-30” rule saw big search increases over the past year, which bodes well for their popularity in 2025

Fitness trends come and go, but search data can offer insight into how people prioritize health and wellness. Fitness search data from the past year demonstrates the rise of emerging movements and nostalgic favorites, along with the fall of some former fitness fads.

Athletech News breaks down the fitness trends that saw the biggest increases in Google search activity in 2024, according to data from PureGym’s annual fitness report.

Remote Personal Training Tops the Charts

Leading the pack as the fastest-growing fitness trend of 2024 is remote personal training, which saw a 414% increase in interest year-over-year. Once a necessity during the pandemic, virtual training has evolved into a preferred choice for many consumers.

Hyrox Grows in Awareness, Popularity

Another highlight of 2024 was the continued rise of Hyrox, a competitive fitness race that combines endurance and functional strength.

Hyrox had a 233% increase in searches year-on-year, likely due in part to international expansion. One in ten people planning to participate in a fitness-themed event in 2024 either entered or planned to enter a Hyrox event, according to PureGym data.

TikTok’s Influence: The ’30-30-30 Rule’

TikTok’s impact on health and fitness trends remains undeniable, with the “30-30-30 rule” emerging as a standout trend in 2024. Searches for this concept—which involves eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up, followed by 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise—spiked by 175%.

The rule’s resurgence is largely credited to TikTok personality and biologist/biohacker Gary Brecka, whose videos have brought renewed attention to this weight-loss strategy.

Back to Basics: Primal Fitness, ‘Quadrobics’ See Spikes

“Quadrobics,” a full-body workout inspired by animal movements, saw a 174% increase in searches. Primal fitness – which also includes movements like crawling, climbing, and balancing – has become popular for its focus on natural, functional movements. Many fitness enthusiasts are drawn to these workouts for their ability to improve overall body awareness, coordination, and core strength.

Nostalgia Returns With Step Aerobics, Rollerblading

Retro fitness trends made a major comeback in 2024, with step aerobics (+124%) and rollerblading (+123%) ranking among the top searches. Step aerobics, in particular, has found new life through creative choreography and integration into high-energy group classes. Rollerblading has also become a popular way to combine cardio and outdoor fun.

Other Trending Searches

Other notable fitness searches in 2024 included:

  • Stroller Fitness (+127%): This trend caters to parents looking to stay active while spending quality time with their little ones.
  • Functional Fitness (+124%): The versatile training style continues to attract a dedicated following.
  • Hiking (+122%): The activity increased in popularity as people sought ways to stay fit and connect with nature.

Fitness Fads Lose Ground

Aktiv Solutions is helping re-design gym floors so they can thrive in the modern age of health and wellness

A gym floor packed with treadmills, benches and bikes is not what it used to be. Although it was once a sight to behold for fitness enthusiasts, it’s now a stressor in the eyes of many, according to Aktiv Solutions, a leading commercial and home gym design company.

“For many years, gyms have been dominated by rows of treadmills, ellipticals, and single purpose weight-stack machines,” said Bryan Green, Founder and CEO of Aktiv Solutions. “Today, exercisers are increasingly seeking open spaces to move and train with variation.”

With modalities that require a freer gym layout gaining popularity, the call for open space, even at the expense of machine availability, has never been louder. Aktiv Solutions is eager to answer that call.

The shift from traditional equipment-centric models to a more holistic, movement-based approach reflects a broader understanding of fitness as not just a way to achieve aesthetic goals, but as a way to enhance overall physical functionality.

What’s driving us right now?

Functional fitness has gained traction, emphasizing exercises that improve the body’s ability to perform daily activities, while high-intensity interval training (HIIT) offers efficient, effective workouts. Sports-specific training is also becoming increasingly popular, with programs tailored to meet the custom needs of both athletes and recreational participants. Recovery has also come to the forefront, with fitness facilities integrating dedicated spaces and services for stretching, relaxation and rehabilitation.

This movement-based philosophy not only enhances performance but also supports a sustainable, enjoyable approach to fitness, empowering individuals to lead healthier and more active lives. Gyms that accomplish this are gyms of the future.

The Rise of Movement-Based Training

For many years, gyms floors were littered by rows of treadmills, ellipticals and single-purpose weight-stack machines. Today, however, exercisers are increasingly seeking open spaces to move and train with greater variation, and with a lot of “toys” in the toy box, such as balls, bars, bands and much more. This shift is fueled by a desire for functional workouts that mimic real-life movements, preparing individuals for both daily activities and athletic pursuits.

“The fitness industry continues to experience a transformative shift, moving away from traditional, isolated equipment towards more dynamic and functional training experiences. This evolution is driven by a growing desire for workouts that prepare us for real-life movements and empower individuals to achieve their fitness goals in a more engaging and effective way.” says Green.

Perhaps the fastest-growing category among a wider spectrum of the population is sports-specific training. This tailored approach meets the unique needs of athletes and individuals participating in specific activities, from pickleball conditioning to youth sports specialization. Sports-specific training tailors movement to a particular sport’s demands, boosting performance and reducing injury risk. It focuses on relevant skills, movements and physical attributes, improving overall efficiency.

Many fitness facilities now offer specialized programs to meet these needs, helping individuals train effectively and achieve their goals, and more personal trainers than ever are finding sports-specific niches they can build a career around, whether its basketball training that emphasizes quick lateral movements and vertical jumps, or a focus on agility and kicking techniques for soccer.

“The rise of sports-specific training is a testament to the growing demand for personalized fitness experiences,” says Green. “Aktiv supports facilities in the creation of a myriad of specialized training environments that cater to the unique needs of athletes and individuals seeking to excel in their chosen sports. Facilities that provide engaging solutions and expert guidance tend to deliver exceptional results-driven experiences.”

The Role of Digital Guidance

Digital guidance has become an essential aspect of modern health clubs. Integrating technology into workout spaces helps members maintain proper form while providing motivation and inspiration. By offering personalized workout plans, progress tracking and engaging content, facilities are creating a more immersive and enjoyable experience for their members.

To accommodate this shift towards movement-based training, gyms are now investing in innovative equipment that facilitates open-space workouts and smarter storage solutions, with a keen focus on strength training. Functional training bays and free-weight areas provide versatile platforms for a variety of exercises from bodyweight movements to kettlebell swings, and plyometrics, and are an ideal application for digital guidance. .

“The fitness industry is clearly undergoing a digital transformation, and our AktivTV platform makes content integration a snap for facilities of all types” says Mike Kelly, Vice President of Global Sales for Aktiv.

“Facilities need plug and play tools to create and deploy engaging content to inspire members to reach their full potential. By providing zone specific scheduling, multi-screen deployments, and white label content, AktivTV helps facilities deliver exceptional value and drive member satisfaction,” says Kelly.

The Growing Importance of Recovery

Recovery plays a vital role in overall fitness and well-being, and people are finally understanding that rest supports effort in a key way. This change acknowledges that effective fitness regimens aren’t just about intense workouts, but also about allowing the body to repair and strengthen itself between sessions.

Many gyms are now incorporating dedicated recovery zones, equipped with tools and spaces designed to facilitate proper post-workout care. These areas may include:

  • Stretching stations with guided routines
  •  Foam rolling and myofascial release equipment
  • Vibration training equipment
  •  Hydrotherapy options like hot and cold plunge pools
  •  Meditation and mindfulness spaces for mental recovery

Recovery-focused classes and workshops are also becoming more common, teaching members about the importance of rest, proper nutrition and stress management.

“With the increased demand for intensified training modalities, it’s more important than ever for exercise facilities to prioritize space and amenity for exercise recovery,” says Kelly. “By incorporating dedicated recovery zones and specialized programming where applicable, facilities can help members optimize their training results by reducing the risk of injury, and enhance the overall well-being for their members.”

Changing Expectations

As the fitness industry continues its shift towards movement-based training, digital integration, innovative equipment and recovery, gyms that can adapt to these changing preferences are more likely to succeed. By embracing emerging trends—such as interactive fitness technology, data-driven insights and diverse training modalities—health clubs can create more engaging and effective experiences and “zones.”

This emphasizes the importance of creating spaces that support a lifelong commitment to wellness. Facilities and practitioners at the forefront of these changes will play a crucial role in shaping the future of fitness, ensuring that it remains relevant, inclusive and accessible to all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds or fitness levels. Aktiv Solutions is at the forefront, providing innovative equipment, digital solutions and facility design expertise helping operators adapt to these dynamic trends.

The most successful fitness facilities will be those that can seamlessly blend movement-based training, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on holistic well-being. The gym of tomorrow is not just a place to work out, but a comprehensive wellness destination that empowers individuals to lead healthier, more active lives.

The Viva Leisure-owned brand has inked deals to bring its 24/7 gym brand to the United Kingdom, Singapore and the Philippines

Plus Fitness, an Australia-based 24/7 gym franchise, is going abroad once again. The brand has agreed to a master franchise agreement that will bring its gyms to the United Kingdom, including at least one in 2025.

This move comes just weeks after Plus Fitness and its parent company Viva Leisure announced a similar deal to establish locations in Singapore and the Philippines. The initiatives stretch the brand’s reach to six geographical areas, having already established a presence in Australia, New Zealand and India.

“We’re excited to enter the U.K. market, which presents significant growth opportunities,” said Harry Konstantinou, CEO of Viva Leisure. “Our low-cost, high-reward franchise model will allow Plus Fitness to scale quickly and meet the growing demand for affordable fitness solutions.”

Viva Leisure oversees and operates several brands along with Plus Fitness including Club Lime, Club Pink, GroundUp, HIIT Republic and Psycle Life. It also recently helped fund Boutique Fitness Studios’ expansion in Australia and New Zealand

The franchise agreement for Plus Fitness in the U.K. spans 10 years and includes an option to tack on two additional 10-year terms. The fitness brand views the U.K. as a hotbed for success, stating that only 15% of the area’s population owns a gym membership. Its low-cost, high-reward franchise model also makes it an attractive opportunity for entrepreneurs.

Plus Fitness was founded roughly 25 years ago, opening four branch locations before taking the franchising leap. It pivoted from featuring big-box gyms to smaller, lower-priced and 24/7 locations around 2009 and has been off and running ever since, now with over 200 sites.

But Plus Fitness isn’t the only gym brand eyeing the U.K. The Gym Group, a high-value, low-price (HVLP) gym operator, plans to open 50 new sites over the next three years. The U.K.-based Gym Group already accelerated its growth from 32 locations in 2012 to 233 gyms as of March.

Fitness software provider Xplor Mariana Tek and equipment supplier REP Fitness also both made advances into Europe this past year as well.
